Team Thailand win Winter League

After a dramatic day of golf Team Thailand emerged as winners of the lowcostholidays.ie Men’s Winter League with a narrow win over Team Caribbean.

The teams finished tied 4-4 after the eight single stableford matchplay matches but Thailand, captained by Liam Mernagh, emerged victorious over Michael Coburn’s Caribbean side when each team’s total points for the day were calculated. Thailand won by a mere four points 220-216 to take the title in a dramatic finish.

Thailand were out of the traps fast with Brian Renaghan, Gerry Murray, Liam Mernagh and Tommy Renaghan winning the first four matches to leave them one win from overall victory. But the Caribbean’s high handicappers struck back as Vincent Murphy, Tom Clarke, George Rogers and Brendan Cleary all won to force that 4-4 tie and have the title decided by the overall points total.

There was double celebration for Thailand captain Mernagh as his individual score of 35pts was also good enough to win the individual single stableford competition after he finished one point ahead of the in-form Sean Hession with Sean Ward third on 33pts thanks to countback.

Eleven handicapper Mernagh’s round included a four pointer at the Index 1 par four fourth which was an excellence bounce back after a six at the par-four third had only yielded one point. Mernagh also rattled in five three-pointers and had two-pointers at the other seven holes.

Sean Hession also found a birdie for four points at the par-five 12th but could only find four three-pointers to miss out on top prize by the narrowest of margins while Sean Ward had five three-pointers, eight two-pointers and a one-pointer at the par-five sixth.

Dundalk Golf Club and the Tournament Committee would like to thank Clem Walshe and lowcostholidays for their kind sponsorship of the Winter League.
