Cooney pips McKeever for Sunday prize

John Cooney won Sunday’s Singles Stableford competition on countback from Willie McKeever after both shot impressive totals of 42pts.

Cooney, a 14 handicapper, played in the morning and after carding four pars in his opening seven holes he produced a birdie at the next to stand on 20pts after eight. However, he stuttered a little around the turn picking up two points over the next two holes but got them back with pars at the 13th and 15th  He then finished strongly with pars at 17 and 18 to match his front nine score of 21pts for a total of 42pts.

Playing off 17, McKeever teed off in the late afternoon and started well with six points from the opening two holes but drew a blank on the third before finishing the front nine strongly with pars at the seventh, eighth and ninth to turn on 21pts and added two more pars on the 10th and 11th to stand on 27 points with seven holes to go. He picked up four points over the next two holes, and bogeyed the index 18 par four 14th for a point to move 32 points with four holes to go. Back to back pars at the difficult 15th and 16th moved him firmly into contention and left McKeever standing on the 17th tee with 37pts and needing five points from the final two holes to take overall victory. He could only managed two bogeys for a further four points and finished on 42pts. That tied him with Cooney on 42pts and their back nine totals were also level so it came down to the final six holes and Cooney edged that 16pts to 13pts.

Teenager Oisin Murray took Cat 1 with veteran Vincent Murphy winning Cat 2 and Joe Garvey claiming Cat 3.
