Rafferty makes Leinster Interpro Team

Caolan Rafferty

Caolan Rafferty

Caolan Rafferty has achieved one of his major goals for 2016 by being selected on the Leinster team for next week’s Interprovincial Championship in Fota Island.

It’s the 23-year-old’s first provincial cap and he’s hoping that it will be a stepping stone to another objective which is to represent Ireland.

The Leinster team, which is captained by Greenore’s legend Seamus McParland, is bidding to retain the title they won last year in Rosapenna and the eight strong team includes four survivors from 2015.

Rafferty got another boost this week when he rose 109 places in the Amateur World Rankings following his great performance at the British Amateur Championship where he reached the last 32.  He is now ranked at 354th in the world.

However, the week ended on a disappointing note for Rafferty and the other members of the club’s Senior Cup team as they went out in the first round on Saturday when they lost 3-2 to Laytown & Bettystown in the Regional qualifier at Baltray.

McDermott’s pace too hot to handle

Ollie McDermott took full advantage of perfect conditions and a golf course in tip top condition to shoot a superb score of 46pts on his way to winning Sunday’s Singles Stableford competition which also served as a qualifier for the 3Ts and Harry Walsh Cup.

Ollie will now represent the men in the next stage of the 3Ts while he also led home the 32 qualifiers for the matchplay section of the Harry Walsh. Everybody who scored 33pts or better qualified and the draw is now posted in the Gents’ locker room.

Playing off 15, Ollie had a slow start with a double bogey for one point on the second but a birdie three at the third yielded four points and after walking off with two points from the index one fourth, he moved into top gear and quickly put distance between himself and the rest of the field.

He parred every hole from the fifth to the 12th for a return of 22 points from eight holes and then picked up three points with a birdie at 14 and a par at 17 before finishing in style with a birdie three at the par four 18th for an impressive 46pts having gone round in five over par gross.

Ray Pepper (20) managed to get within four shots of McDermott as he returned 42pts for second place overall while Niall McCaul (8), David Smyth (13) and Michael Begley (21) were the three category winners. Padraig Grennan (22) took the Juvenile Prize with a score of 39pts.
