Dundalk aim for Newsam Cup success

Dundalk Golf Club will hope to end the inter-club season on a winning note this Saturday when they meet Knightsbrook in the final of the 2016 Newsam Cup at Royal Tara Golf Club.

Several years of hard work by team managers Edmund Sheridan and Peter McCaughey have paid off this year with a series of brilliant performances helping Dundalk to reach the final for the first time in years.

The competition is for golfers with a handicap of 17 or more and who are over 30 years old on January 1. The format foursomes, which is a two player team playing alternate shots, and there are five individual matches played over 18 holes and the first club to win three matches winning the tie.

All the rounds up to the final have been played on a home and away basis and Dundalk began their campaign with a major scalp when they knocked out the 2015 winners Headfort from Kells. This was followed by a very close match against neighbours Greenore before they comfortably saw off the challenge of Townley Hall in the semi final.

While only 10 players will be playing in the final the panel of players representing Dundalk is made of 15 members and all contributed to the club reaching the final leaving managers Sheridan and McCaughey with a few tough decisions to make on Saturday when they name their five pairings.

The Dundalk panel is: Nigel Giff, Eamonn McEneaney, Adrian Kenny, Kevin Carthy, Sean Quigley, Brian Crombie, Bobby McCarthy, Hugh Reilly, Jim Gollogley, Sean O’Sullivan, David Cairns, Kenneth Cairns, Martin Cairns, Benny O’Shaughnessy and Caoimhin O’Callaghan.

Saturday’s final will tee off at 2.30pm and is being held at Royal Tara as they are responsible for the running of this annual tournament which is played amongst the clubs in the North East.

Purcell takes President’s Prize

Presidents Prize 2016

Prizewinner Graham Purcell is presented with his prize by President Tom Geary.

Graham Purcell was a clear winner of Tom Geary’s President’s Prize on a perfect day for golf last Sunday.

The 21 handicapper had three shots to spare over Conall Murdock (9) and those two along with Gross Prize winner Aaron Grant were the only players in the 187 strong field to break 70.

Purcell got off to a great start with pars at the first and second and went to four under when he birdied the par five sixth for a nett eagle. He matched that on the next hole, the index three seventh, where he had two shots and walked off with a par for a nett three. A par four at the eighth meant he stood on the ninth tee standing at seven under and at the stage the tournament was very much his to lose.

A few minutes later he was walking to the 10th tee having dropped two shotsafter running up a triple bogey six and turned in five under but he showed great composure to bounce back immediately with a birdie four at the 10th for yet another nett eagle.

Purcell moved to eight under when he parred the 14th but he handed two shots backs immediately with a triple bogey seven at the par four 15th. However, he kept his head over the final three holes, two of which were playing into the wind, and even managed a par at the short 17th to get to seven under and a nett score of 65.

That left him three ahead of Murdock and Aaron Grant (+1) but the latter’s 67 was enough to comfortably win the Gross Prize. Grant only dropped only one shot in a near flawless round which included birdies at all four par fives as well as the par four 14th and 18th.

Category winners were Barry Grennan, Paschal Keenan and Oliver McGinnity while Larry Hanratty (24) took the Veterans Prize with a 70.
