Birdies do the trick for Cumiskey

Three birdies on the back nine which yielded 11 points helped Mark Cumiskey take Sunday’s Singles Stableford competition.

The 10 handicapper scored an amazing 25pts on the homeward nine to return an overall total of 45pts and he won by three points from Michael Gill (8) who edged out early clubhouse leader Michaerl Begley (20) for third place.

Cumiskey went through the front nine in 19pts as he picked up three points at the first, second and but dropped shots at the fourth and eighth. A two point par at the 10th and a three point par the index two 11th yielded five points from the first two holes of the back nine and Cumiskey then picked up four more points after birdieing the par five 12th. The next five holes yielded 13 polnts from a birdie and four pars before the third birdie of his round arrived on the par four last.

He covered the 18 holes in 73 gross and that was enough to take him past Begley who had held the clubhouse lead from early morning after a steady round of 42pts and he will rue a blank at 16 when he airmailed the green with his approach shot and ended up in the forest at the back.

Begley had to settle for the Category Three prize after he was pipped for second overall on countback by Michael Gill who also finished on 42pts. The other Category winners were Alan Hurley (5) and Gareth Halpin (17) while Leinster Boys U16 Champion Josh Mackin (3) took the gross prize with 38pts..

SSS increased by one shot

With the level of changes applied to our course over the last eighteen months we invited the Leinster Golf Course Rating team to review our course and advise if the current Standard Scratch Score reflects its current playing difficulty. The SSS is the measurement by which handicaps are assessed.

Following their assessment the ratings team concluded that Dundalk is now much a tougher course and increased the SSS on each course by one shot so that the new SSS is Blue 73, White 72, and Green 71.

Brilliant back nine wins it for Murdock

A brilliant back nine was the key to12 handicapper Derek Murdock winning Sunday’s Single Stableford competition on countback from John McCann (17).

A three for two points at the par three ninth meant that he walked to the 10th tee having picked up just 15pts from the opening nine holes. While he had scored on every hole, he had only managed one three pointer when he parred the par four third and that two point par at the ninth had been preceded by three one point holes.

The next four holes were a different story altogether as he found the momentum that ultimately led to a winning score and picked up 13pts with a birdie at the 10th and par at the 11th and 12th and a birdie at the 13th. Pars at the 16th and 18th yielded more three points as he covered the back nine in 25pts to finish on 40pts.

McCann also posted a score of 40pts but was blown away on countback by Murdock’s back nine and had to settle for second overall.

The category prizes were won by Niall McCaul (8), David Cairns (18) and Larry Hanratty (25) while Tom Dunne (22) took the Juvenile Prize with 36pts.
