Davis wins Arkew Cup in style

Honorary Secretary Pat Davis was an emphatic winner of the Arkew Cup on Sunday when he produced his best round of the year to shoot an eight under 64 and win by four shots from John Paul Casey (17).

The 17 handicapper’s round included three birdies, six pars and seven bogeys as well as a double bogey and a triple bogey.

The double bogey came on the opening hole but Davis showed tremendous character to immediately bounce back at the next with a birdie three and pars at the fourth and fifth left him three under after five. A par four at the eighth and a birdie two at the ninth brought him to six under at the turn and further pars at the 10th and 12th left him eight under standing on the 15th tee.

A gross score in the 70s was definitely looming on the horizon at this stage but a horrible triple bogey seventh at the 15th threaten to derail Davis’s march to victory. However, he regrouped and he got the dropped shots back when he holed for a birdie two at the 17th to get back to eight under.

Shane Hession (6) took the gross prize with a 77 while his father, Sean (9) took the Category 1 prize with the other category winners being Seamus Bailey (13) and Patrick McCormack (22). Adam Lennon (21) took the Juvenile Prize with a 70.

The Arkew Cup was the final Golfer of the Year competition and congratulation are extended to Frank Byrne who emerged as the overall winner.

For the second successive week Wednesday’s Open Singles Stableford competition was won by a visitor with Greenore’s Adam McDonnell (5) taking the honours on countback from 2016 Captain’s Prize winner David Murden (10) after both shot excellent scores of 42pts. Murden had the consolation of taking the Category 1 prize with Ashfield’s Damien Ross (15) and Dundalk Club President Tom Geary (21) winning the other two category prizes.

The final preparations are underway for the ILGU Finals beginning on September 20. The time tables for ball spotters, car park attendants and score recorders are at the bar.  If you have time to spare on any of the days we would very much appreciate it.
