Five point birdie reaps rewards for McCrave

Anthony McCrave (21) was the winner of the Second Round of the Locovore Autumn Series when he edged out David Brennan (13) and Vincent Conlon (8) on countback after all three had tied on 30pts in Sunday’s Singles Stableford competition.

McCrave had started steadily enough with picking up four points from the first two holes thanks to two bogeys but when he failed to score at the third things looked bleak given there were only ten holes left to play in this 13 hole competition.

But the tide turned immediately for McCrave at the very next hole, the par four index one fourth, where he had two shots and picked up a massive five points after he managed a birdie three. He parred the par three fifth for another three points and got another three points at the par five seventh where he had two shots.

That left him on 17pts after seven holes and he went through the next three holes in six points to stand on 23pts after ten holes. The 16th, which was his 11th hole, yielded another two points as did the 18th and in between he managed to par the 17th for three points as he finished on 30pts.

He was joined on that total by Brennan and Conlon but while Brennan had 21pts over the final nine holes it was no match for McCrave who had 26pts, helped greatly by that five point birdie on the fourth.

Austin Shaw (8), Michael Hamilton (16) and Anthony McGuinness (23) took the category prizes.

The 10pts for being the leading Category 3 player has moved McCrave into second place in his section of the Locovore Autumn Series, level with Mark Coan and one point behind George Rogers. Shaw leads Category 1 on 17pts which is seven ahead of Conlon and Gregory McCaughey while Michael Hamilton is the Category 2 leader on 12pts, one better than Tom Clarke.

The Locovore Autumn Winter Series includes scores from Saturday as well as Sunday and the scores from Saturday have been weighted by minus five points to reflect the shorter course played.

Darragh O’Brien (13) won Week One of the Nine Hole Repeater with Brendan Cleary (23) taking Week Two with a tremendous score of 25pts.

McKeever edges out Duffy to win

John McKeever shot an excellent round of 42pts to win Sunday’s Singles Stableford competition edging out Paddy Duffy by a single point.

The 12 handicapper was into the groove straight from the off as he parred four of the first five holes for a 14 point haul and he picked up another nine points from the next four holes as he parred his way to the turn.

A bogey at the 10th was his first one point hole but he responded well by parring four of the next five holes for another 14pt haul to move to 37pts with four holes to go.

Another one point followed at the 16th but he stayed on the rails to the finish as he parred 17 and bogeyed 18, where he had shot, for a further four points and a finishing total of 42.

That was one better than Paddy Duffy (13) who shot an excellent 41pts to finish second overall while the category prizes went to Austin Shaw (8), Seamus Bailey (12) and Eamon Hoey (18).

Course knowledge helps McCaughey

As one of the key members of the hard-working course committee over the last few years, Connor McCaughey knows just about every blade of grass around Dundalk Golf Club and he used that knowledge to great effect last Sunday,

A countback over the final six holes was needed before McCaughey, playing off six, was declared the winner after he had finished on 39pts with Darren O’Brien (16) and George Rogers (20).

McCaughey shot 21pts for the front nine, helped greatly by four points at the third where he had a birdie three and three point pars at the fourth, sixth and seventh.

Down the back he shot 18pts with three point pars at the 15th and 18th cancelling out a no score at the par three 13th. That par at the 18th was to prove crucial as the extra point was enough to get past O’Brien and Rogers on countback.

O’Brien and Rogers finished second and third overall respectively while the category winners were Sean Hession (6), Danny Gallagher (14) and Sean Gallagher (23). James Reilly (28) took the juvenile prize while veteran Gerry Murray had a hole in one at the 13th
