McKeever edges out Duffy to win

John McKeever shot an excellent round of 42pts to win Sunday’s Singles Stableford competition edging out Paddy Duffy by a single point.

The 12 handicapper was into the groove straight from the off as he parred four of the first five holes for a 14 point haul and he picked up another nine points from the next four holes as he parred his way to the turn.

A bogey at the 10th was his first one point hole but he responded well by parring four of the next five holes for another 14pt haul to move to 37pts with four holes to go.

Another one point followed at the 16th but he stayed on the rails to the finish as he parred 17 and bogeyed 18, where he had shot, for a further four points and a finishing total of 42.

That was one better than Paddy Duffy (13) who shot an excellent 41pts to finish second overall while the category prizes went to Austin Shaw (8), Seamus Bailey (12) and Eamon Hoey (18).

Course knowledge helps McCaughey

As one of the key members of the hard-working course committee over the last few years, Connor McCaughey knows just about every blade of grass around Dundalk Golf Club and he used that knowledge to great effect last Sunday,

A countback over the final six holes was needed before McCaughey, playing off six, was declared the winner after he had finished on 39pts with Darren O’Brien (16) and George Rogers (20).

McCaughey shot 21pts for the front nine, helped greatly by four points at the third where he had a birdie three and three point pars at the fourth, sixth and seventh.

Down the back he shot 18pts with three point pars at the 15th and 18th cancelling out a no score at the par three 13th. That par at the 18th was to prove crucial as the extra point was enough to get past O’Brien and Rogers on countback.

O’Brien and Rogers finished second and third overall respectively while the category winners were Sean Hession (6), Danny Gallagher (14) and Sean Gallagher (23). James Reilly (28) took the juvenile prize while veteran Gerry Murray had a hole in one at the 13th

Uzell pips Crosbie to take victory

A super back nine was enough to allow Alan Uzell, playing off 20, pip Martin Crosbie (10) on countback in last Sunday’s Singles Stableford competition.

Uzell shot 24pts on the home nine having turned with 17pts on his card. Although he picked up three points by parring the first and fifth he handed them back with one pointers at the third, seventh and eighth.

However, down the back nine, it was a much more impressive as Uzell took full advantage of the pleasant day.

Three points at the par five 10th got him back to level par for the day and he took command of the competition when he took 13pts from the 12th to the 15th with a scoring blitz that included a birdie two at the par three 13th.

That left him on 35pts standing on the 16th tee and he delivered handicap pars all the way in to finish on 41pts and take the overall honours.

Crosbie, who was the only other player to break 40pts, had to settle for the Category 1 prize while David Brennan (14) and Jim Deary (21) were the other category winners.

Carins powers his way to victory

Eighteen handicapper Martin Cairns produced a round that included one birdie and eight pars on his way to posting a score of 43pts in Sunday’s Single Stableford competition.

He could even afford not to score at the par five seventh, where he shot a triple bogey eight, and still have three points to spare over second placed Cathal Muckian (12).

Cairns amassed 15 points from the opening six holes before his stumble on the seventh but five points from the next two holes saw him turn for home on 20pts. He kept the scoring going as he headed down the back nine with pars at the 10th and 11th and a birdie at the 12th to move to 30pts with six holes to go. More pars followed at 14th and 17th while his only dropped shot on the back nine was at the 15th as she shot 23pts for the back nine and an overall score of 43ptd.

Kieran Arthurs (12), Paul Reilly (17) and Colm O’Hanrahan (25) were the category winners with Reilly also managing to include a hole in one at the par three 17th in his round.
