Cairns birdie blitz does the trick

Competitive golf made its first appearance of 2017 at Dundalk last Sunday when Kenneth Cairns had the distinction of claiming the initial victory.

The 17 handicapper shot 35pts over the 13 holes played and had two points to spare on Gerry Murray (90 with Willie McKeever (17) a shot further back in third.

Cairns started well and pars at the second and third left him with eight points after three holes but a blank at the fourth threaten to derail him.

But he showed great character to bounce back from that mishap and reeled off four successive pars before birdieing the par three ninth and also the par five 10th.

That left him on 27pts with three holes to go and he picked up a further four points by bogeying the 16th and 17th before nailing his third birdie of the day on the par four 18th to complete a superb round.

Derek Murdock (10), Sean O’Sullivan (17) and Colm Garvey (18) won the category win while Peter Rogers (2) took the Gross Prize with a fine score of 28pts…

The Tournament Committee will run a Winter League team event from February 5 to April 2. The entry fee is €5 and the entry box is located in the bar. The closing date for entries is January 29 at 6pm.
