Cairns burns it up to take Sunday prize

David Cairns (18) won Sunday’s 13 Hole Singles Stableford competition with the sort of round that most golfers can only dream about.

His 38pts haul consisted of three bogeys, nine pars and an eagle as produced a round that was the equivalent of 12 under par.

With a shot on every hole, Cairns opened with a bogey for two points before notching his first par of the day at the second for three points and another bogey at the third left him on seven points.

Then came a period of amazing scoring as Cairns parred the next six holes, picking up 18 points, and turned for home at the ninth on 25pts.

An eagle three at the 10th yielded another five points and he then parred 16 and 17 for a further six points before taking a bogey five at the 18th to finish his round on 38pts.

That was two points better than 14 handicapper Michael Kelly who edged out Clem Walsh (6) on countback for second place after both were tied on 36pts

Category winners were Fergal Sexton (11), Brian Ward (15) and Peter O’Brien (18) while Peter Rogers (2) took his second gross prize of the year with an excellent score of 29pts.
