McCaul shoots best nett and best gross

The fourth round of the Winter League was won by six handicapper Niall McCaul who shot a nett 32pts and also managed to return the best gross score of the day with 28pts for the 13 holes. The 13 hole format meant McCaul only had four shots at his disposal so it was an impressive round.

It began with a three point par at the first which was followed by a three point birdie and although he only earned five points over the next three holes he took eight points from the two par-fives on the front nine as he eagled the sixth for four points and birdied the seventh for four points.

Another birdie followed at the eighth for three points and a two point par at the ninth meant he completed the front nine in 24pts.

Three pars at the 10th, 16th and 17th yielded seven points as he only had a shot at the 16th and, although he bogeyed the par four 18th, the point he gained was enough to get over the line in first place.

Another six handicapper, Billy Cairns, shot 31pts to take the Category 1 honours while Ollie English (12) won Category 2 with 30pts and Noel Reid (18) with 27pts claimed the Category 3 prize on countback.

O’Donoghue takes Round 3 in Winter League

Fourteen handicapper Anthony O’Donoghue won Sunday’s Singles Stableford competition which also doubled as Round 3 of the Tiernan’s Centra Blackrock Winter League.

A run of five successive three-point holes from the seventh to the 16th proved crucial and was an excellent response to his only dropped shot of the day at the par five sixth where he didn’t have a shot and had to settle for a one point bogey,

O’Donoghue also had back to back three point holes at the third and fourth for a total of seven three pointer while he also managed to score two points on five holes.

Kieran Arthurs (12) took the Category 1 prize on 31pts from Clem Walsh (5) finished on 30pts but had the consolation of taking the gross prize after shooting 26pts which was the equivalent of level par for the 13 holes. Sean O’Sullivan (17) and Anthony McGuinness (23) took the other two category prizes.

The 13 Hole Singles Stableford competition on St Patrick’s Day was won by Michael Hamilton (15) who beat Kenneth Cairns (16) on countback after both had shot best of the day scores of 31pts. They were a point ahead of Sean Ward (17), Michael Browne (21) and Gerry Murray (9) with Ultan Gaughran (9) being the final player to make the podium after his 29pts clinched sixth place.
