Cunningham leads Gold Medal qualifiers

The weekend action was dominated by the Gold Medal Qualifiers which took place on Saturday and Sunday and attracted a large entry of players battling to win one of the 64 places on offer for the matchplay stages.

The leading qualifier was 10 handicapper Barry Cunningham who posted a 67 on Sunday where the cut was 77/37.5, one higher than Saturday’s cut of 76.

Qualifiers are requested to advise the Tournament Committee if they are unable to participate in the Gold Medal Match play competition. The draw will take place on Wednesday, April 12.

The qualifiers were played over the long blue course but Cunningham began with three straight pars and after bogeying the index one par four fourth and the par three fifth he got back to playing par golf over the nine holes to the 14th.

Bogeys followed over the next three holes but he finished with a par for a fine gross score of 77 and a nett 67 to take the leading qualifier prize.

The Competition Scratch score for Saturday was 73 and Sunday was 74.

Double for McDonnell as Winter League concludes

The Tiernan’s Centra Blackrock Winter League successfully concluded in beautiful sunshine on Sunday as the 16 matchplay finals took place. The winners, who are named in the results section, received their prizes afterwards in the clubhouse.

The club would like to thank Tiernan’s Centra Blackrock for their generous sponsorship of the Winter League.

The finals were played as part of the last 13 Hole Singles Stableford competition of the Winter season and it proved to be a double success for Gavin McDonnell as he not only won his final but he took the overall prize in the competition.

The 19 handicapper has been playing steadily over the last few months but it all came good for him on Sunday as he shot 30pts to edge out Vincent Conlon (8) on countback.

McDonnell’s round included five three-point holes, seven two-point holes and one one-point hole and that was enough to give him his first overall win of 2017.

Conlon had the consolation of taking the Category 1 prize while Martin Farrelly (13) took Category 2 and Alan Uzell won Category 3. Neal MacKell claimed the Gross Prize with 25pts.
