Rafferty claims Irish Intervarsity Championship

Caolan Rafferty has finished off what has been an unforgettable year by winning the Irish Intervaristy Championship at Enniscrone.

After opening with a 78 to lie four shots off the lead, Rafferty put himself right in the mix with a four under par second round 69 and a final round 75 left him with one shot to spare on three over from his playing partner and Maynooth University team-mate, Eugene Smith of Laytown & Bettystown.

Rafferty is among seven members of the GUI Senior Panel who have been selected to travel to PGA Catalunya Resort, Girona, Spain on November 28 for a four-day coaching session with national coach Neil Manchip. The group also includes Colm Campbell and Tiarnán McLarnon who were winner and runner-up respectively in this year’s Dundalk Scratch Cup.

Rafferty is also part of an eight strong Ireland squad that has been selected to compete at the South African Stroke Play Championship at Pecanwood Golf Club from February 6 to 9 and the African Amateur Championship at Glendower Golf Club from February 13 to 16.

Walshe clear winner of Halloween Hamper

Five handicapper Clem Walshe was a clear winner of Sunday’s Halloween Hamper competition which was sponsored by Traynor’s Butchers.

He returned a fine score of 42pts in the seven club competition after shooting an equally impressive gross score of 37pts which was a one-under par 71.

His round included birdies at the first, seventh and 10th and his only bogeys came at the 13th and 16th as he produced a round that saw him score 23pts over the front nine and 19pts on the way home.

He had two points to spare over Eddie Rocks (11) who finished 40pts and took second on countback after shooting 22pts on the inward nine relegating David Brennan (14) to third place.

Christy Ward (8), Noel Reidy (13) and Gavin McDonnell (18) took the three category prizes.

Matchplay competitions decided after months of action

The various internal matchplay competitions have now been decided after several months of action.

Maurice Murphy has won the 2017 Gold Medal after beating Ciaran Sheridan in the final while Seamus Bailey captured the Carolan Cup by defeating Ray Pepper in the decider.

In the Harry Walsh Cup Joe Flanagan and Benny O’Shaughnessy beat Joe Flanagan to take the trophy for the first time.

This year saw the introduction of four category matchplay competitions which proved very popular.

In the Senior competition Eoin Murphy emerged as the winner while Declan Ward beat Pat Daly to claim the Minor title. Neil Mullooly defeated Fergal Harte in the Junior final while Stephen Buckingham was beaten by Pat Curran in the Intermediate final.

There are also two major foursomes competitions during the year and in the Men’s Foursomes Sean Gallagher & Conor McClenaghan were beaten by Michael McDermott and Paul Morrison while Clem Walshe and Oonagh Quinn beat Mickey and Mags Coburn in the Mixed Foursomes final.

Seven clubs more than enough for O’Brien

Sunday’s Singles Stableford competition was a novel event with each player limited to seven clubs instead of the normal 14 but the lack of firepower didn’t bother 13 handicapper Darren O’Brien who took the overall prize with a magnificent score of 44pts.

O’Brien’s score was four points better than Jim Rowland (12) who edged out Eddie Rogers (3) on countback. Rogers took Category One and his 37pts gross was also the day’s best gross score.

Michael Stewart (13) won Category 2 with 37pts while Paschal Keenan (15) was the Category 3 winner after posting a score of 38pts.

O’Brien had a superb start with four successive pars for an opening haul of 12pts and after a two point bogey four at the fifth he then parred the next five holes for another 12pts.

That left him standing on the 11th tee with 26pts already in the bag and he parred the 12th, 15th and 18th on the way home with a one point bogey five, at the short index 18 14th, the only blemish on a card that consisted of 13 pars and five bogeys.
