Thornton birdies last to claim his turkey

A birdie on the last hole delivered victory for Shane Thornton (14) in the first of this year’s Turkey competitions on Sunday.

Thornton pipped Seamus Bailey (11) on countback after both were tied on 35pts in the 14 hole singles stableford competition.

After a steady start with two point bogeys at the opening two holes Thornton parred the third and fourth to move to 10pts after four holes.

Thornton didn’t have a shot at the par three fifth so his bogey only yielded him a point but he parred the sixth and bogeyed the seventh for a further four points before finishing the front nine with back to back three points pars at the eighth and ninth.

That brought him to 21pts and a bogey six at the 10th yielded another point before he kicked for home with a storming finishing that yielded 13pts over the final four holes.

Thornton had three point pars at the 11th, 12th and 13th before crossing to the 18th where his birdie three delivered four points and clinched his overall victory.

Last week’s winner Ollie English (13) finished third behind Thornton and Bailey after shooting 33pts and edging out Danny Miele (11) on countback.

The category prizes went to Austin Shaw (9), Darren O’Brien (13) and Benny O’Shaughnessy (21) while Peter Rogers posted the day’s best gross score with a round of 27pts.
