Impressive Reneghan lifts Paddy Markey Cup

Brian Reneghan was an impressive winner of the first Golfer of the Year competition on Sunday when he was the only player to shoot a round in the sixties. His six under par 66 earned him a four shot victory over Sean Gallagher (20) on a day when occasional heavy showers, a strong wind and slick greens made for testing conditions.

Reneghan, who plays off six, got off to a perfect start when he birdied the first and he followed this under with another birdie at the third but his bogeyed the third, fifth and ninth on his way to a one over par gross total of 37 for the opening nine and a nett score of two under,

Reneghan produced tremendous golf down the back nine with eight straight pars from the 10th before he birdied the last for a gross score of 35 and a nett score of 32. That meant he had covered the 18 holes in level par gross with his six shots giving him that impressive nett score of 66.

Newsam Cup squad member Sean Gallagher shot a two under par 70 to finish second while the category prizes were won by Sean Reidy (4), Donal Curran (12) and Martin McCaughey (20).

The Veterans Prize was claimed by Richard Barry (9) with a two over par 74 while Aaron Grant with a 75 took the gross prize and Cathal Grennan won the day’s Nine Hole competition.
