Caraher hangs in to take Sunday prize

The Singles Stableford competition on October 20 was won by Jim Caraher (8) who edged out Kieran Reidy (16) and Peter Rogers (3) on countback after all had finished on 37pts.

Caraher shot 20 points down the back nine but it was managing to cover the front nine in 17pts, despite recording blanks at the first and ninth, that probably contributed most to his victory.

After failing to score on the opening hole, Caraher then had to settle for a five and one point at the second but a three point par at the third got him up and running and after three successive two point holes he then birdied the par five index three seventh for four points and followed that with a three point par at the eighth. That left him on 17pts playing the ninth but he walked off with no points after a double bogey five.

However, he responded with six successive pars from the tenth for a haul of 15 points and then picked up a further four points with a bogey at the 16th and a par at the 17th. A five for one point at the last brought him to 37pts and that point also proved crucial in the countback as Reidy covered the back nine in 19pts to Caraher’s 20pts.

While Rogers had to settle for third overall, he did have the consolation of shooting 34pts for the day’s best gross score while Charlie Monahan (10), Sean O’Sullivan (17) and Conor Martin (19) won the category prizes.
