Irwin Lockington Salver

Twelve handicapper Derek Murdock took the Irwin Lockington Salver on Easter Sunday with a six under par 66 to win by one shot from Peter McCaughey.

Murdock took full advantage of a fast start. He had shots on the opening four hole stretch and parred the tricky quartet for four nett birdies to go four under. He went to five under when he parred the index three par five seventh but gave it back at the part three ninth where he didn’t have a shot.

But a birdie three at the index two 11th was the equivalent of a nett eagle two and sent Murdock to six under with seven holes to go. He went through the next five holes without a blemish but a four at the par three 17th, where he didn’t have a shot, dropped him back to five-under.

However, he had a shot at the last and showed great character up the challenging 18th to get a four, and a nett three, to finish on 66 and pip McCaughey by a single shot.

McCaughey, who played off 16, took second overall on countback thanks to a nett 33 over the back nine.

Nine-handicapper Ultan Gaughran edged out Clem Walsh on countback for the Category 1 prize after both had shot 67 while a 67 was good enough for Ciaran Dunne to take the Category 2 prize. Oliver McGinnity, with a 70, edged out Martin McCaughey in Category 3.

Ward, who was second last week and won the previous Sunday, shot an eight under par 64, off 16, in the first major Strokeplay event of the season to win comfortably from a group of players on 67.

Best of these was 12-handicapper Ollie English, who took second place on countback thanks to a five under par 31 over the back nine.

Brian Reneghan who has also had a good start to the season won Category 1 ahead off teenager Josh Mackin who shot 68 to follow up his score of 41pts for third place on St Patrick’s Day.

Ward denied by Richie finish

A superb back nine delivered an impressive victory for 24-handicapper Peter Richie in Sunday’s Singles Stableford Competition and denied last week’s winner Brian Ward from claiming back to back victories.

Tied on 39pts, Richie took the overall victory on countback after shooting 23pts to Ward’s 20pts over the back nine. He shot six three-pointers on the homeward trip having managed just two on the front nine where he turned with just 16pts compared to Ward’s 19pts.

Just like last week Ward finished with three point pars on 17 and 18 for an impressive back nine of 20pts but this time he came up short after Ritchie’s even more impressive finish.

Gerry O’Keefe and Michael Hamilton also shot 39pts and took the top two prizes on Category 2 while Noel McGuinness took Category 3 with the same score. Brendan Duffy won Category 1 with 37opts on countback from Gerry Murray.

Ward’s good start continues

Sixteen handicapper Brian Ward continued his good start to the new season by winning the Singles Stableford Competition on Sunday with a score of 39pts.

That was enough to pip Brian Mernagh, playing off 13, on countback with the scores over the final six holes being used to determine the winner after both shot 20 points on the home stretch.

Ward did well to bounce back from a no score at the par three fifth and a one pointer at the par-five seventh to take four points from the eighth with a birdie three and three points from the ninths and tenth courtesy of pars. Two more three pointers at the 17th and 18th made for an impressive finish and one that ultimately got him over the line.

Form players to the fore

drive in Dundalk

Our 2015 captains, Brendan Keane and Mary Lou Grennan, finally got to drive themselves into office last Sunday and both did in style, despite the week long wait, with splendid tee-shots that split the first fairway.

There was also plenty of style on show in the two competitions played on Sunday with the form players from the Men’s Winter League continuing to sparkle.

David Murden, who won two individual competitions during the five weeks of the league, found himself on the winners’ podium yet again as he teamed up with Seamus Bailey, Gerry Byrne and Gerry Clarke to take the 14-hole Four Person Team Scramble with a score of 45.80..

They pipped another strong team, consisting of Austin Shaw, Sean Hession, Liam Mernagh and Pat McGuinness, with a mere 0.17 of a shot in the difference.

For Sean Hession, who took a major individual prize in the Winter League, it was to be his first visit of the day to the prizes as straight after the Captains’ Drive-In he teamed up with Mary Hession for the 9-hole Mixed Four and won the Back Nine prize with a score of 21pts.

The Front Nine was won by Tommy and Briege Reneghan who shot 22pts. While Tommy is another player who has started the year well, it was a welcome return to winning ways for Briege following a long absence through injury and a possible pointer towards the new season which is now well and truly underway.
