McKeown holds his nerve to take Saturday Hamper

Seventeen handicapper Pat McKeown held his nerve in the wind on Saturday to see off the challenge of two of the club’s low men and take the first of the weekend Halloween Hampers.

McKeown shot 21pts over the back nine for an overall score of 38pts and that was enough to beat teenager Eoin Murphy, off six, on countback by two points.

One point behind this pair was five-handicapper Brian Reneghan while the best score of the day was posted by juvenile winner Aidan Curtin. Playing off 17 he shot 42pts and is set for a reduction in his handicap by at least one shot.

Storming finish from Brodigan

A storming finish saw Andrew Brodigan pip Mark Carins to win Sunday’s Stableford Club Competition on countback.

After a steady start, 13-handicapper Brodigan had 16 points after seven holes but the wheels looked to be coming off when he emerged from the tricky eighth and ninth with just one point.

A par at the par-five 10th stopped the bleeding and he then took nine points from the next three holes with three pars before stuttering with a one-point bogey on the index 18 par four 14th.

When Brodigan stood on the 16th tee he had 31 points on his card but, in blistering finish, he parred the long par four and then produced back to back birdies over the closing holes for a back nine total of 24pts and final score of 41pts.

That was enough to comfortably beat Mark Cairns on a back nine countback. Cairns, who is now off 14, has seen his handicap drop sharply this season and he showed he is adjusting to his new-found status with an impressive round that included one birdie and eight pars and saw him score on all 18 holes.

Gavin McDonnell’s persistence over the season finally paid off as he finished in third place with 40 points while Aaron Grant shot an excellent 38 points off plus two to take the gross prize with Neil Smith best of the juveniles.

Daly and McCarthy combine to win Club Fourball

High-handicappers Ciaran Daly and Bill McCarthy combined brilliantly to win today’s Men’s Club Fourball in windy conditions over the white course.

Ciaran, off 18, and Bill, off 26, produced an impressive 47pts as the slick greens caught out many pairs and it was enough to take first prize ahead of seasoned campaigners Liam Mernagh (11) and Sean Hession (10) who finshed second on countback after carding an excellent back nine of 23pts on their way to an overall total of 46pts.

Niall Connolly (16) and Peter McCaughey (17) also dovetailed well to take third spot and followed up a sizzling front nine of 24pts with a back nine of 22pts on their way to 46pts.

A feature of today’s event was the new look seventh hole which was in play for the first time in competition following the addition of a new pond wall in front of the green and a devilish pot bunker to the left of the putting surface.
