New leaders after week two of Men’s Winter League

Lowcostholidays small logo

With the cobwebs having been shed on week one, there was a dramatic improvement in scoring in the second round of the Men’s Winter League on Sunday.

Every one of the 13 teams improved their score from the opening week with the biggest increase being recorded by Egypt, whose five counting players shot 172pts, a massive 42pts better than their first round total. Conor McCaughey led their scoring for the second successive week as he shot 36pts off six.

That helped Egypt jump from 11th to sixth and they are now just 14 points adrift of the competition’s new leaders, Thailand. Last week’s second place side shot 171 points to go top, with Liam Mernagh leading the way with 37pts. They are now two points ahead of Caribbean whose best of the day total of 175pts saw them move from joint sixth to second with Michael Coburn their best scorer on 39pts.

Round 1 leaders Greece were 14pts better than last week with 165 but slipped to third, albeit just three points behind the new leaders and ten points behind Malta who have moved two places to fourth.

All the players in action on Sunday were also competing in the weekly 14 hole Singles Stableford competition and 20 handicapper Colm Garvey led the way with a tremendous score of 41pts, two ahead of Michael Coburn with the evergreen Liam Mernagh third, after a countback, on 37pts, thanks to a back nine of 18pts.

Eighteen handicapper Tom Clarke got the first competitive hole-in-one of 2015 when he aced the par three 5th hole.

Greece set pace in Winter League

The eagerly awaited Men’s Winter League teed off on Sunday with a 14 hole single stableford competition.

After the first round Greece are setting the early pace on 148pts with Thailand two points further back. Portugal lie in third on 144pts.

With all eight of their players in action, Greece were able to discard three cards and rely on five counting cards which featured three players on 28pts and two on 32pts, with Eugene J Hanratty and Kevin Barry returning the top scores.

Thailand, with seven players in action, were led home by Sean Quigley on 32pts with their lowest counting card being 24pts.

Sean Hession was top scorer for Portugal with 32pts and their top five dove-tailed well as their lowest counting score was 27pts.

With France in fourth on 141 and three further teams on 140pts, there are six teams within eight points of the leaders as the league moves to its second round next week.

The individual competition was won by 22 handicapper Pat Daly on 33 points who is not taking part in the League. As a free agent he is sure to be the subject of many approaches for his signature over the coming week as some team captains look to beef up their squads ahead of the next round.
