Open Week action grabs headlines

The past week has seen plenty of competitive action at Dundalk Golf Club as the annual May Open Week was in full flow and there was plenty of headline grabbing action

Teenager Padraig Fallon saw his handicap drop by three shots in three days as he won the Open Singles Stableford on Monday of last week. He had lost a shot when winning the Best Nett Prize at the DAR Golf sponsored Dundalk Junior Scratch Cup the previous Saturday and then, off his new handicap of eight, lost a further two shots two days later when he shot 46pts to win by six shots from another talented teenager and current All-Ireland Faldo Series U16 champion Eoin Murphy.

Juvenile Committee chairman Jim Caraher is obviously getting plenty of inspiration from his young charges as he was a back to back winner during Open Week. Last Wednesday, he won the Open Singles Stableford with 40pots as he edged out Pat Donaghy on countback and the following day he was back on the winner’s podium when he led his team to victory in the Four Person Team Event sponsored by Flanagan Motors, despite having lost a shot overnight to drop to eight. Vincent Conlon (8), Padraig McDonnell (20) and Danny Gallagher (13) were the other members of the winning team, whose score of 90pts was one more than the second placed team of David Williams (19), Fergus O’Callaghan (13), Eamon McEneaney (17) and Gavin McEneaney (12).

Saturday’s Open Fourball, sponsored by National Tile, was won by seasoned campaigners Paddy Duffy (13) and Vincent Murphy (16) who dovetailed superbly to produce a blemish free round of 47pts. They had eight two point holes, nine three pointers and a four pointer at the ninth where Murphy struck a glorious tee-shot to within three feet of the tricky back pin and then sank the slippery downhill putt. They won by one point thanks to a brilliant up and down on 18 from Duffy who curled in a severely breaking downhill putt from six feet for par. Bobby McCarthy (16) and Shane Hession (5) were second with Richard Copas (17) and his guest from Sutton, M Drake (15) in third a further shot behind,.

Dundalk Golf Club would like to thank all those who participated in Open Week and the companies which sponsored competitions. Our next Open Week will be from July 3 to 10.

Rafferty wins Club Championship

Caolan Rafferty

CLUB CHAMPION: Caolan Rafferty

Caolan Rafferty captured the Club Championship for the first time when he replicated his first round 69 in the second round to win by four shots from Aaron Grant.

Rafferty, who is in superb form at present, held a three shot lead over Grant going into the final round. Although Grant improved on his first round score by two shots in carding a two-under par 70, Rafferty held his nerve and returned a three under par 69 for a two round total of 138, six under par.

Chris Blackmore took the Round 2 Gross Prize with a 71 with Neal MacKell taking the Round 1 accolade after a 72. The Round 1 Nett went to Ruairi Gogarty with Ciaran Traynor taking the Round 2 prize.

Rafferty’s had taken firm control of the Club Championship, which is confined to members with a handicap of nine or better, after the First Round.

The plus three handicapper, shot a three-under par 69 to lead by three shots from the club’s other plus handicapper, Aaron Grant (+1), who carded a level par 72.

Having opened with two straight pars, Rafferty got the first of five birdies, at the par-four third and followed that with back-to-back birdies at the par-five sixth and par-five seventh before turning in four-under with a birdie two at the ninth. He gave a shot back at the par-five 10th, got back to four under with a birdie four at the 12th and eventually finished at three under following a bogey five at the difficult 15th.
A birdie three at the opening hole got Grant off to a great start but a double-bogey six at the index one fourth was followed by a birdie four at the sixth and a bogey four at the ninth as he turned on one-over. A birdie at the par five 12th got Grant back to level par and he parred his way home for a 72 to lie three shots behind Rafferty.

Neal MacKell (4) also shot a 72 with Maurice J Murphy (3) on 74 as ten players found themselves within eight shots of the leader but in the second round nobody was able to put enough pressure on Rafferty and he held on for an impressive wire to wire victory.

2015 Club Championship – Overall: 138 – Caolan Rafferty (+3)   69/69, 142 – Aaron Grant (+1) 72/70. Round 1 – 1st Gross: Neal MacKell (3) 72, 1st Nett: Ruairi Gogarty (7) 69/33. Round 2 – 1st Gross: Chris Blackmore (1) 71, 1st Nett: Ciaran Traynor (6) 70/22/10. CSS 72.

Cairns hangs tough to take first place

On a course playing long and tough after last week’s heavy rain, Martin Cairns showed his toughness to take first prize in Sunday’s Turkey’s Competition which was played over 14 holes.

The 11 handicapper’s excellent score of 34pts was enough to pip the ultra-competitive Michael Keating by one point with Brian Ward, Jim Rowland and Oliver McGinnity a shot further back on 32pts.

There were also prizes for the five players who finished on 31pts plus three who came home with 30pts.

Blackmore wins as Rogers drops to one

As a former goalkeeper Richie Blackmore was pretty good at keeping the score down on the football pitch but he showed on Sunday that he knows how to score on the golf course.

The 14 handicapper shot an impressive 42pts, scoring on every hole, to take Sunday’s Turkey’s competition in the face of stiff competition from some of the club’s single figure players.

On the front nine Blackmore went to the turn in 20 points, thanks mainly to four straight pars from the sixth, and then produced back to back pars on 12 and 13 before parring three of the last four holes for a back nine of 22 points and an overall score of 42pts.

That was good enough to see off the challenge of two handicapper Eddie Rogers who recorded an impressive 40 points from a gross round of two-under-par 70. His round included four birdies at the 4th, 8th, 10th and 12th and just two bogies at the 6th and 16th. Although it wasn’t good enough to take the top prize it was enough to get Eddie down to a one-handicap for the first time in his long and distinguished career and everybody at the club sends their congratulations on this notable achievement.

Teenager Josh Mackin is another player heading in the same direction and the five handicapper continued his excellent season with a score of 39pts to take third on countback from Maurice Soraghan who has managed to keep his golf game together despite all his great and time-consuming work on the Course Committee.

Also making the prize list were John Keane, Peter McCaughey, Terry Conlon, Brendan Reilly and Jim Dwyer.

A day of good scoring was reflected in the CSS of 71 (37pts).
