Overall winners of ‘Play in Pink’ 2018 National Final which was held at Glasson Country House Hotel& Golf Club, Athlone, were Deirdre Smith and Pauline Campbell from Dundalk Golf Club. The Pink Day in aid of Breast Cancer Research took place on Saturday 25th & Tuesday 28th August. The course on both days was a sea of ladies dressed in pink to support this extremely good cause. This day was a huge success with 143 ladies playing in the competition. The winners Sally McDonnell and Oonagh Quinn with a great score of 41pts. Deirdre Smith and Pauline Campbell had another great gross score of 38pts. We are hoping that the overall winners and gross winners will qualify to play in Glasson in the finals later in October. Congratulations to all the winners and many thanks to all the ladies for their support. A huge thank you to the sponsors The Gift and Art Gallery for the lovely prizes and their continued support.

 

 

Deirdre Wins Scratch Cup Circuit

Deirdre Smith won the overall golf Irish Scratch Cup Circuit and is the top lady amateur lady golfer in Ireland. Deirdre has played eight 36hole Scratch Cup events. She won in Royal Co Down and finished second in Portrush Valley , Woodbrook and Lahinch. Not only did Deridre win this prestigious event she also set a new course record in Royal Portrush Dunluce Links with 73 and in Woodbrook with another fantastic score of 70. Deirdre managed to accumulate 90 points from a maximum of four events taking the overall victory. This is superb achievement and the members of Dundalk Golf Club would like to congratulate Deirdre on her fantastic achievement.

 

Lady Captain Pat Cleary’s Charity Event Raises over 7500 euros

Lady Captain’s Pat’s charity an Open Four Lady Team Event was held on 21st and 24th July. This competition was in aid of The Mater Foundation and PWSI. It was sponsored by Sinead and Fergus O’Callaghan, Precision Cables. The competition was a huge success with over 40 teams participating. There were ladies from a number of visiting clubs also. This is one of the biggest competitions on the golfing calendar and the results did not disappoint with the winning team Joan Mc Kenna, Claire Mc Kenna, Zara Wadding and Siobhan Rogers coming in with a phenomenal 93pts. Sinead O’Callaghan from Precision Cables spoke at the presentation at how delighted they were to sponsor this very special competition. Lady Captain Pat thanked the sponsors for their beautiful prizes. She thanked everyone associated with making this fundraising event a huge success.

This night was all about the charities. Lady Captain Pat spoke of her delight at being able to support two very worthy charities. She explained that The Heart House charity is part of the Mater Foundation and is directly involved with Sudden Adult Death Syndrome, particularly focused on research and development and screening of those at risk through genetic testing. The Heart House seeks to prevent this and other hidden heart conditions.
PWSI, Prader Willi Syndrome is a rare genetic disorder and PWSI rely heavily on charitable donations in order to support the families and carers of the people with PWS. Lady Captain Pat’s niece was born with PWS and she wanted to make a donation to this Charity.

Dr Hugh McCann a cardiologist from The Mater Hospital was invited to this presentation and spoke to the ladies of Dundalk Golf Club. He spoke of his love of Dundalk being born in Barrack Street and how proud he was to be from Dundalk. He explained that Sudden Cardiac death has no answers and creates huge worries for families. It is rare and undetectable. One person per week per year dies of this condition. He expressed his thanks at the fund raising done by the ladies. It is needed to get resources to look into this devastating condition. Lady Captain Pat thanked Dr High McCann for attending the presentation and at the end of the evening announced that over 7500 euros was raised.

Lady Captain Pat’s Day a Huge Success

Lady Captain Pat’s Prize took place on Tuesday 10th and Saturday 14th July. This was a 36hole stroke competition played over two days. On day one the ladies arrived to beautiful sunshine greeted by Lady Captain Pat Cleary. The weather was perfect and the ladies enjoyed not only golf but afternoon tea with some wonderful cakes baked by the ladies. Katie and Anna Rowland produced a spectacular golf themed cake especially for Lady Captain Pat and won the best cake award.

The golf did not disappoint either. In the lead after day one was Deirdre Clarke with a superb 67nett. Deirdre spoke of her delight at her score and said she played some wonderful golf. Hot on her heels was Maureen Sheridan with 69nett. Maureen was very excited with her round. Mary Smyth had an excellent 70nett and said she produced her best round of the season. Ursula Fee was very excited after shooting a 71nett. Lady Vice Captain Criona O’Reilly had an 82 Gross giving her a 72 nett. There were a number of ladies with 73 and 74 nett.

On Day two the pressure was on. The conditions were tricky with the course having dried out more. Pauline Campbell and Niamh Maguire arrived in with 72nett after shooting 74 on Day one. Deirdre Clarke held her nerve and had a wonderful round again coming in with 74nett winning the overall prize. As the results emerged it was clear that the ladies found the conditions difficult. Pauline came from 15th place on day one to claim the overall runner up just beating Niamh having six pars on the back nine. Rita Moriarity won third place having a combined score of 148. Rita played some very steady golf on both days. Congratulations to all the winners.

A wonderful night was held on Saturday 14th July. Lady Captain Pat spoke of her delight at the huge number that arrived for Lady Captain’s night and the large number of ladies who played in the competition. She thanked her committee for all their hard work and welcomed her sisters and friends to her evening. Damien English and his staff were complimented on looking after the course so well with the very hot weather we have had recently. She thanked the bar and catering teams for all their hard work.

She presented her overall prize to Deirdre Clarke who was thrilled with winning this prestigious golfer of the year prize. Deirdre thanked Lady Captain for her beautiful prize and spoke of her delight at winning. Pauline Campbell also thanked Lady Captain Pat and said how thrilled she was to be overall runner up. Ladies danced the night away to music by Ann King. A fantastic night was enjoyed by everyone. A huge thank you to Lady Captain Pat.

The 18 Hole Stroke GOY 3 / Medal 2 sponsored by Leslie Walker was played on Tuesday 19th June. The day was glorious and the results did not disappoint. Benri MacGuinnes who is playing very steady gold came in with a superb score of 70nett taking the overall position. Berni was delighted with winning this prestigious golfer of the Year competition and thanked Leslie for his very generous sponsorship. Hot on her heels was Mary Horan who also had a 70nett winning Class C. Mary was thrilled with winning Class C and also commended Leslie on the support he offers the ladies. Congratulations to all the winners.

At the presentation evening Lady Captain Pat Cleary thanked Leslie for his sponsorship and spoke about the invaluable lessons Leslie has given the ladies playing on teams. The most recent lessons focused on bunker playing and chipping, a crucial part of the game of golf. Leslie gave some very useful tips that will enable the ladies to improve their skills around the greens. Leslie said he was delighted to be part of Dundalk Golf Club and is always on hand to support the ladies. Leslie’s lovely wife Aoife was presented with a beautiful bouquet of flowers from the ladies.

 

Winning Team, Mannan Castle

 

The Four Lady Team event sponsored by the The Hair shop was played on Tuesday 12th June. This is an annual charity in aid of Hospice Homecare. This competition was a huge success with fifty teams playing. Ladies were represented from fourteen different golf clubs. When the ladies arrived they received beautiful shirts and jackets sponsored by Horseware in Dundalk. They then played in the beautiful sunshine on a course in fantastic condition. The winning teams were from Mannan Caste and Warrenpoint both coming in with superb scores of 89pts each.

At the presentation evening Lady Captain Pat Cleary welcomed Maura O’Callaghan the Chairperson of Hospice Homecare. She spoke about the fantastic work the Hospice do for those suffering with cancer and their families. She spoke about how cancer is indiscriminate and the Hospice provide support in the form of transport to hospitals, vouchers for food and equipment. She commended the Hospice volunteers and commented on the fact that they are the backbone of the organisation. She was delighted to announce that the ladies had raised 6300 euros for Hospice Homecare. Lady Captain Pat thanked the ladies for their generous support of this invaluable organisation.

Lady Captain Pat thanked the extremely generous sponsorship given by the Hairshop. Paula Bishoff from the Hairshop spoke about how delighted they were to provide sponsorship for this special competition. She complimented her staff who were all present and referred to the fact that the salon is a success because of the hard work of the staff. She complimented Catherine McElligott who is an innovative manager in the salon. She spoke of the importance of supporting Hospice Homecare and what it means to the Hairshop to sponsor this Team Event.

Congratulations to Deirdre Smith who won the Scratch Cup in Royal Co Down on Sunday 8th April. This was played over 36 holes and Deirdre played some absolutely fantastic golf. She had a rocky start but pulled numerous birdies out of the bag and went into the lead. She was absolutely delighted with her win and Dundalk Ladies would like to offer our congratulations to Deirdre on this superb victory.

 

Leslie and Jean Give Great Advice

On Tuesday 3rd April Leslie Walker and Jean Connolly gave a very valuable talk to the ladies. Leslie has been coaching the ladies for a number of weeks and has been focusing on various aspects of the game of golf. Tonight Leslie spoke about the importance of preparation for the upcoming club matches. He spoke about the importance of supporting each other as teams and creating that team spirit that is vital in winning matches. Leslie has a very positive attitude and emphasised how essential it is to create positivity among the team players.

Jean Connolly is renowned for her expertise in Mindfulness and she spoke about the importance of being positive and relaxed when playing matches. She gave some tips on breathing techniques that help ground us when playing golf. Jean emphasised how mindfulness reduces stress and helps decrease negative thinking.

This was an interesting evening and the ladies felt uplifted after the presentations. Lady Captain Pat thanked Leslie and Jean for the invaluable advice and presented Leslie with a gift for the support he offers the ladies.

The first presentation night of the season was held Tuesday March 20th. A large number of ladies were in attendance. Lady Captain Pat Cleary congratulated all the winners and spoke about how much she was looking forward to her year as Lady Captain. She wished all the teams lots of luck in their upcoming matches and informed the ladies that at the next presentation Leslie Walker the club professional was going to give a talk to the ladies.
