Irish Senior Women’s Open

Dundalk Golf Club was proud to host almost 50 top golfers for as far away as USA and Canada over three days last week. The weather was glorious and the course was immaculately presented for the competition which finished in wonderful style, going to six extra holes of nail biting golf between defending champion Gertie McMullen from The Island and Finland’s Minna Kaarnalahti.

The 1st and 18th were shared twice before Kaarnalahti seized the initiative with a closing bogey at the 6th extra hole to claim her third title in four years. It was an exciting finish to a wonderful week’s golf.

Lady Captain Anne extended a special word of congratulations to all the local players from our neighbouring clubs including Pauline Walsh and Patricia Black (Headford), Kay Mc Cartan and Mary Mc Goey (Greenore) and Gill Rouiller (Mannon Castle).
But Lady Captain Anne saved her highest praise for Dundalk Golf Club ‘s own Ita Donnelly who finished in the top 15 and was among the prize winners. Ita carded a fantastic score of 75 in round one on Wed and held her nerve for the following two days, playing super golf on her home course. Ita said her performance was like a dream come true for her and she credited her friend and caddy Mary Sinton, for keeping her steady throughout the competition.

Lady Captain’s Prize 2014

Lady Captain Anne Doohan held her Lady Captain’s Prize on Tuesday 17th and 24th June. The ladies arrived, all 186 of them, in glorious sunshine on Day One to a clubhouse decorated with bunting and balloons where they enjoyed an amazing array of cakes, tarts, cupcakes and cookies all day long! Photos were taken and the Lady Captain was overjoyed by all the cards, presents and good wishes she received from the ladies. Scoring was high with the course in magnificent order and it was all to play for heading in to Day Two. All eyes were on the beautiful category prizes from Mint by Baldwins and especially on the Tiffany Neckpieces Lady Captain Anne had displayed for the overall winner and runner up.
There was great excitement in the clubhouse as the results were handed to Hon Sec Elizabeth on Tuesday evening. The presentation began with the prizes to the men who had played 9 holes after the ladies each day. The overall winner was Edmund Sheridan. The category prizes followed and prize winners were clapped and cheered to accept their prizes. The excitement was mounting until finally the overall winners were announced. The overall gross prize went to popular player Michele Quinn (8) with a score of 160. There was genuine delight as Kathryn McGuinness was called to the stage to accept the overall runners up prize with a score of 141 (74/67). Kathryn, despite the nerve racking occasion, made a lovely speech and thanked the Lady Captain and all the ladies for making her win so special. At last it was time to call the winner and a standing ovation greeted the announcement of Bernie McCabe as Winner of Lady Captain Anne’s Prize. Bernie (22) carded a great score of 140 (69/71). Bernie also spoke of her joy and disbelief at winning the prestigious prize which she told us she hadn’t seen until it was placed around her neck that evening! She thanked Lady Captain Anne and spoke for all the ladies when she said how lucky we were to be members of such a wonderful, friendly club. The occasion had certainly been a great success and thoroughly enjoyed by all.
Lady Captain Anne was thrilled with the two days and thanked everyone for their support. She congratulated all the winners and invited everyone to dance the night away in celebration of the winners of her prizes.

SPRING LEAGUE
The Spring League got under way on Saturday 18th and Tuesday 21st January with nine teams competing.
The ladies were very impressed with the course which was presented in fine condition, despite the recent stormy weather. Congratulations to the first winners of the season who came in with excellent scores.
Featuring among them was Lady Captain Anne Doohan, putting down an early marker that her duties as Lady Captain will not affect her golf! Also starting the year in winning form is Aideen Ahern who put in a superb performance last year, losing eight shots in the process. Oonagh Quinn, who is one of the many new members that have joined under the present attractive membership rates, lost no time claiming her first of many prizes to come!
The new Social Committee, chaired by Noeleen Gernon, has put together a great programme to get us started for the year, with quizzes, poker classics, music and craic galore planned. The first of the social events is a lighthearted table quiz on Thurdays 6th February. All are welcome and tickets are available at €20 per team.
Lady Captain Anne and the Ladies’ Committee wish everyone a very happy 2014 and good golfing to all.

GOLFER OF THE YEAR

Lady President Vera, sponsor Joan Martin of Food Solutions, Golfer of the Year Catherine Smyth and Lady Captain Bríd

Lady President Vera, sponsor Joan Martin of Food Solutions, Golfer of the Year Catherine Smyth and Lady Captain Bríd

Congratulations to Catherine Smyth who won Golfer of the Year 2013. Catherine had a truly memorable year. She started off the year with good performances on the second day of Lady Captain’s prize and in Professional Leslie Walker’s prize. She had a clean sweep in July and August firstly winning President Vera’s with a great score of 69 and then winning Captain Noel’s prize with an even better score of 67. The icing on the cake was clinching Golfer of the Year by two shots leading the pack the whole way through. Catherine has lost two shots on each of her big wins and a further two shots under ESR (exceptional score reduction). a total of six shots from a handicap of 20 down to 14. These last two shots were lost due to her good performance at the start of the season. Food solutions sponsored the Golfer of the Year and Joan Martin presented the prize on behalf of the sponsors.
