Open week a big success

All Ireland Fourball managers Frank Byrne and Larry Soraghan will be well pleased with the results of the final competition of open week when the overall prize was decided on countback between two members of their panel.

Peter O’Brien (15), who has been in tremendous form for the team on their march to the last 16 in Leinster, took the honours after he and Gerry McDermott (17) shot 39pts on a day when a swirling breeze, afternoon rain showers and lightning greens made for testing conditions.

O’Brien shot 22pts on the back nine against McDermott’s 18 with Alan Hurley (5) finishing in third place on 38pts.

Open Week was a great success with large entries in all competitions and the club would thank those businesses who sponsored events for their generous support.

Austin Shaw (9) has been in fine form all year and on Saturday he teamed up with Vincent Conolon (6) to take the Open Fourball with a score of 46pts which was four better than Ciaran Sheridan (5) and Damien English (10).

On Thursday, Shaw had been part of a team that included Jim Caraher (8), Ciaran Rafferty (17) and Greenore’s D McArdle (16) which came second in the Four Man Team event with 89pts, one less than the 90pts put together by Willie McKeever (16), John P Casey (16), John McKeever (12) and Greenore’s M Coburn (18).

Shaw’s third prize of the week came in Monday’s Open Singles Stableford when he shot 36pts to take the Seniors Prize while Ciaran Dunne, another player who has featured a lot among the prizes this year, took the overall victory with 39pts. That was two better than Conor Hackett (12) and George Rogers (19).

July Open Week a tremendous success

The July Open Week proved to be a tremendous success with large entries, plenty of visitors and some great golf on a Dundalk course that is in pristine condition at the moment.

A brilliant back nine propelled 22 handicapper Michael Browne to victory in Sunday’s Open Singles Stableford which he won comfortably on countback after four players tied on 39pts.

Browne, who was one of the early starters, certainly didn’t look like a winner when he covered the opening ten holes in just 17pts, but he picked up three points at the 11th and again at 12th and, after securing two points at the 13th, he birdied the short par four 14th, which was playing into a strong wind, for four points to give himself a chance.

After two points at the 15th, he took advantage of the index four 16th playing downwind and where he had two shots. His five gave him three points, a four at the par three 17th yielded another two points and a par at the 18th earned the three points which brought him to 39 with nobody coming near to matching his 24points on the back nine

Local knowledge was very much to the fore in Thursday’s Open Four Man Team Event which was sponsored by DKIT Sports and Leisure Centre. The winning team of Sean Ward (17), George Rogers (19), Damien English (11) and Ollie English (12) combined superbly to shoot an impressive 97pts which was seven points clear of the second placed team.

Six handicapper Gareth Duffy produced once of the rounds of the season to win the Oriel Cup last Wednesday. He shot a two under par gross score of 70 for a nett total of 64 and a four shot winning margin from 21 handicapper Paul Durnin. Duffy’s round included seven birdies, seven pars, three bogeys and just one double bogey as he romped to a well deserved victory. Liam McGailey (10), Len Mullins (16) and Noel McMahon (23) took the category prizes while Ciaran Johnson (15) was the Juvenile winner.

Monday of Open Week saw Ross Quigley (22) win the Open Singles Stableford which was sponsored by Cavan Crystal. He shot a well crafted 42pts to win by three points from this year’s Juvenile Captain Cian Lynch McCrave (12) who shot 39pts with Derek Murdock third on 36pts while a member of the club’s Barton Shield team Ricky Newell (1) took the gross prize.
