Once the south corner of Dundalk Bay grabs your attention while cornering the winding road leading to Blackrock, with the Cooley Mountains taking hold of the background scenery, you know Dundalk Golf Club isn't far away.
Even on a wet spring morning in April when this hacker teed it up for the club's annual 36-hole Senior Scratch Cup, a competition that carries considerable merit on the amateur circuit, the elements didnt take away from what the course has to offer.
From the championship markers, this mature tree-lined parkland measures 6,160 metres and demands accuracy from the outset, especially from the tees. If able to keep it on the short, golfers will be rewarded, particularly when they reach the putting surface. The greens are so well manicured and roll so true that a good putt always has a chance.
Indeed, you need only to look at the list of previous winners to see the stature of golfer that has been on display in recent years. Ireland international and Walker Cup hopeful Noel Fox is the current Champion, succeeding John McGinn, who won in 2002 before going on to win the Irish Close the same year. Before that, the likes of former British Amateur champion Michael Hoey (2000), Michael McGeady (2001) and Gary Cullen (1999) have their names on the prestigious trophy.
It is testament to the course and its condition that so many of the top amateurs make the trip to Dundalk each year..
