They survived a late comeback from the visitors with three of the five matches requiring tie-holes while another was decided on the 18th.
The top match was the only one that was clear-cut as Conor Murphy and Gary Lennon recovered from losing the opening against Iain MacDonald and Aidan Moore. They took control around the turn winning the eight and ninth to go two up and then won the 11th and 12th to extend their lead to four holes before wrapping up a 5&4 victory on the 14th.
Elsewhere things were much tighter although Denis Cunningham and John Paul Casey looked to be coasting to victory over Bernard Scully and Craig Keenan when they won the 14th to go four up with four to play.
But the Portarlington duo suddenly burst into life and won the final four holes to force the match down the 19th.  The Dundalk pairing were rocking at this stage but they dug deep, found the green in regulation, and two-putted for par and the win.
There was never more than one hole between Conall Murdock & Adrian Kenny and Dylan Dunne & Colm Murphy in the second match and the Dundalk pair were never behind until they missed a short par putt on the 17th to go one down with one to play.
However, they got up and down from the edge of the 18th green to win the hole and force the match into sudden death with the Portarlington pairing parring the 20th to take match.
The match between Dundalk’s Tony McGuinness & Conor Murray and  Portarlington’s Jack Cole and Dermot Keenan was also close with never more than a hole between the teams. The home pair needed a win on the 18th to force sudden death but the visitors took the 19th and a valuable point for their side.
With the first four matches decided and the sore at 2-2 all eyes turned to the final match out on the course between Aidan Thornton & John McKeever and Niall Cooke & David Cosgrove. The Dundalk pairing were never behind but kept getting pegged back every time they got their noses in front. However, when they won the 16th hole they went ahead for the third and final time and closed the match out by winning the 18th for a two-hole victory,
 Dundalk now head to Portarlington on Saturday, September 19 for the second leg with a slender lead and will need to dig even deeper if they are to lift the Barton Cup for the fourth time.

]]><![CDATA[Dundalk go in search of third Barton Cup success]]>Tue, 01 Sep 2026 23:00:00 GMThttps://www.dundalkgolfclub.ie/news/dundalk-go-in-search-of-third-barton-cup-success​Dundalk Golf Club will go in search of a third Barton Cup success over the next two weekends when they face Portarlington in the two-legged final of this competition which is confined to Leinster Golf Clubs.
It also one of the oldest inter-club competitions having been first played for in 1905 – the year Dundalk Golf Club was founded – and Dundalk will be hoping to repeat the successful campaigns of 1961 and 1999. 
The format is foursomes with a combined handicap of 14.0 or higher and is played off scratch.
The first leg takes place this Saturday in Dundalk with the five matches teeing off at ten minute intervals from 11:40 while the second leg in Portarlington on Saturday, September 19, will start at 12 noon.
Having received a bye in the first round Dundalk beat neighbours Ardee 3-2 in the second round and then defeated County Louth 3.5 to 1.5 in the third round. That was followed by a 3-2 victory over Forrest Little before accounting for St Anne’s by 3.5 to 1.5 in the quarter-finals. That set up a semi-final clash with Old Conna with Dundalk coming out impressive 4-1 winner to reach the final.
Portarlington, who won the competition for the first time in 1950, started their campaign with a 3-2 win over Edenderry before beating Mountrath 3.5 to 1.5. A 3-2 win over neighbours Portlaoise followed before they beat Esker Hills by 3.5 to 1.5 in the last 16. Kilkenny were dispatched 3.5 to 1.5 in the quarter-final before a 3-2 win over Bray booked their place in the final.
Having used 17 players on their way to the final Dundalk manager Derek Murdock and his assistant Mickey Coburn will have plenty of options when it comes to selecting their five pairings and it is hope that there will be plenty of home support at this Saturday’s home leg.

Dundalk won the Monarch Boys U18 Cup on Saturday with a 2.5 to 0.5 win over Greenore in Ardee.
Odhran MacShane sank a putt on the 18th against Gavin Crudden & Dylan Carron to give himself and Daniel Cronin a one hole win in the top match.
Ronan Norton Quigley & Maciek Dobros secured the second point for Dundalk with a 2&1 win over Tiarnan McCann & Andrew Clarke.
​With the overall win secured, the final match on the course was called in with Dundalk’s Oisin McGuinness & Rory Power one down after 16 against Tom Crudden and Christopher Carron.

​Caolan Rafferty won the Castleknock Senior Scratch Cup on Saturday with two brilliant rounds of 68 and 69 to finish on nine under par, one shot ahead of Paul Coughlan and Quentin Carew.
He produced a flawless four under par 68 in the first round with his four birdies coming in the first six holes. His second round of five under par included six birdies as well as the only bogey he had over the 36 holes.

After shooting a 71 gross for a 68 nett to win Division 1 in the President's Prize the previous Sunday, MacShane kept it going with a round that included five birdies at the sixth, 10th, 13th, 14th and 18th with the only bogey of his round arriving at the par three 17th.  He also had the best gross score with 40pts. 
Sean Lawlor (7) from Portarlington warmed up for the Barton Cup final with 41pts to take the Division 1 honours while John Englishby (21) claimed Division 2 with 41pts. A Greenore visitor, Jason McCourt (29) won Division 3 with 42pts after being edged out for overall honours by MacShane’s brilliant back nine of 22pts.

Last year’s Captain’s Prize winner Oliver McGinnity added another major to CV when won Micheal Byrne’s President’s Prize which was held over the weekend of August 22 and 23. 
Playing off 26, which was three shots lower than his handicap 12 months ago, he shot a brilliant 89 gross for a nett score of 63 which was one better than Dessie Ward (19) and two lower than the 65 nett returned by Kevin Barry (15) and Conor Murphy (22).
McGinnity had a solid front nine with seven bogeys and two pars at the par three fifth and par four eighth as he reached the turn in 43 gross. He had a further six bogeys on the back nine along with double bogeys at the par four 11th and 16th but finished with a par at the 18th as he came home in 46 gross for a nett score of 63, nine under par.
That was enough to clinch overall victory and another major title as he finished one shot ahead of Ward who shot 83 gross off 19 for a nett 64. Ward had gone out in 42 gross helped by four pars and he had another five pars on the back nine as came home in 41 gross to take second place overall.
Kevin Barry’s 65 nett was good enough to see him win Division 1 from David Murden (15) and Leonard Matthews Jnr (18) while Conor Murphy won Division 3 with his 65 nett ahead of Anthony McGuinness (25) and Ciaran Corbett (23).
Odhran MacShane (3) shot five birdies to win Division 1 on countback from Sam Malone (8) after both had tied on 68 nett. Malone knocked in four birdies but was undone by a triple bogey eight at the par five 12th.
Caolan Rafferty with a bogey free four under par 68 won the gross prize while the veteran’s prize went to Pat Donaghy (16) who shot 66 nett.

​Waite (12) took his second Division 1 win of the week while Davy McDonnell (20) won Division 2 with 41pts and Martin Stewart (45) from Concra Wood won Division 3 with 41pts.
Robert O’Hanlon had the best gross with a level par 36pts that included five birdies at the seventh, 10th, 14th, 15th and 17th.

Odhran MacShane was the best of the Dundalk contingent in the U19 Boys as he finished in fifth place behind winner David Bohill of County Louth. Roan Noan Quigley was sixth and Mario Gaztambide was eighth. 
In the Girls U20 competition Isla Smith finished second behind Elizabeth Sue Sharkey

Playing off 26, McCaughey had gone out in 50 gross without managing to record a par over the opening nine. But he righted that down the back with three successive pars from the 12th hole and a fourth at par three 17th as he came home in 43 gross.
Brian Mernagh, playing off (16) went out in 42 gross thanks to three pars and a birdie at the seventh. He came home in 41 gross with pars at the 10th and 14th followed by birdies at the 16th and 18th.
While his back nine nett score of 33 wasn’t good enough to match McCaughey’s 30, it was enough to pip Paul Morgan (18) for first place in Division 2. Morgan’s nett back nine of 36 included a double bogey at the 14th and a triple bogey at the 18th.   
Waite, who was off 13, shot a gross score of 80. He raced out of the traps and covered the front nine in 37 gross thanks to back-to-back birdies at the sixth and seventh and four pars. Another birdie followed at the 10th but double bogeys at the 12th and 18th cost him the overall victory.
He took the Division 1 honours from Seamus Bailey (12) while Ray Pepper (21) with a 68 nett took Division 3 on a last six countback from Willie McKeever (21).
Caolan Rafferty had six birdies at the third, sixth, ninth, 10th 16th and 17th on his way to a three under par 69 and the best gross score of the competition while Charlie Monahan was celebrating after a hole in one at the 17th.

With Old Conna hosting three of the five matches it was always going to be a tough test for the team managed by Derek Murdock and Mickey Coburn but they rose to it in some style after seeing Maurice Soraghan & Conor Murray beaten as Old Conna put an early first point on the board.
Aidan Thonton and John McKeever won 5&4 to level the scores and then Conall Murdock & Adrian Kenny won 3&2 to put Dundalk ahead before ther victory was rounded off by a 4&3 win for Conor Murphy & Gary Lennon and a one hole victory for Dennis Cunningham and John Paul Casey.
Dundalk will now face either Portarlington in the two legged final with the first leg scheduled for Saturday, September 5 and the second leg two weeks later on Saturday, September 19.  
Portarlington won 4-1 after taking their two home matches and the top match away with the other two matches called in.
