Thailand will meet Caribbean in the matchplay final of the lowcostholidays.ie Winter League after they claimed the top two spots followings five weeks of intense competition among the 13 participating teams.
Thailand finished first, just one point ahead of Caribbean who were knocked off top spot on the final weekend after leading for the previous two weeks. They shot a best of the day 163pts to leap frog over the leaders who returned 160pts. Greece, who had led the league after the opening week, finished third and will rue their Week 3 collapse which, in the end, has cost them dearly.
Sean Quigley, who has been tremendous form throughout the league, again led the Thailand scorers with 34pts as all five scorers scored 31pts or better while David Murden top scored for Thailand closely followed by Tom Clarke, who recorded his fifth successive round of 30pts or better.
Murden, a 12-handicapper who recently joined the club, won the individual single stableford competition over 14 holes for the second time in three weeks, with his 37pts being two more than Kieran Reidy in second with Clarke in third, also on 35pts, after losing out on countback.
Murden’s round included two four-pointers at the par five seventh and 12th and six three-pointers over the 14 hole competition while Reidy picked up four points for his birdie four at the 12th and although he had seven three pointers it was one pointers at the third and sixth which ultimately cost him.
The lowcostholidays.ie Winter’s League title will be decided next Sunday when Thailand and Caribbean meet in a singles stableford matchplay final. The total stableford score will determine the winner of each match and if both teams are level after the completion of the matches then the total stableford score will determine the winners. It that doesn’t produce a winner then Thailand’s one point win over the five week league campaign will prove decisive.
