The inter-club season is up and running with three teams already seeing action.
The Club's first win came from the Women's Intermediate team who beat Ashbourne 3-1 with two of the wins coming away from home. First up for the Men was Leinster Trophy team who were beaten 4-3 by Balbriggan in their first round match The club has entered the Men's Super Seniors competition organised by Elm Park Golf Club which is a Champions League style competition for players over 70 years of age. Despite conceding 12, 13, 12, 8 and 20 shots respectively in the five matches of their opening group game against Roganstown, the Dundalk team managed to draw the match. A round of solid consistent scoring saw Conor Byrne (22) hold off a closely grouped
chasing pack to emerge as overall winner of the weekend Single Stableford competition with 40 points. It was second successive week that he emerged as the overall winner. Conor’s outward nine included three pointers with pars at the par four second and third holes and the par three ninth to boost his score to 20 points. On the back nine he maintained his steady scoring, carding three pointers with pars on the par five 12th and par four 14th and a consistent run of two pointers on the other seven holes to finish the back nine on 20 points. Conor’s 20 points on the back nine was enough to pip Andrew Shekleton (16) who finished runner up, also on 40 points, but came up short when it went to countback with 18 points on the closing nine. Andrew’s front nine included pars for three points at the par four first, third and eighth holes, par three fifth and the par five seventh hole to turn on 22 points. His back nine failed to match his outward run despite finishing in style with a birdie three for four points on the last hole. Division 1 winner Michael Coburn (13) also had 40 points with a memorable 24 points on an outward nine that included four pointers from birdies at the par four third and eighth holes. Division 3 winner Michael Hamilton (22) on 39 points edged out Patrick Arrowsmith (25), also on 39 points, with a better back nine. The winner of Division 2 was Ross Kehoe (19) with 39 points. The Wednesday Open Singles Competition sponsored by McKenna Man was won by Patrick Gray (20) with 41 points, his 20 points on the back nine edging out Kevin Henry (23) who also finished on 41 points. The competition was also the qualifier for the matchplay phase of the Harry Walsh Cup. Pars for three points at the par four second and eighth holes and the par five sixth, backed up with two pointers on the other six holes, saw Conor turn on 21 points. His back nine continued the scoring consistency with three pointers at the par four 11th and 14th holes and par five 12th together with a solid run of two pointers from the 16th to the 18th holes which gave him 20 points on the back nine. Runner up was Jimmy O’Connor (18) on 40 points with a round that included three pointers at the fifth, eighth and ninth holes to boost his score to 20 points on the front nine. His back nine included a run of three pointers from the 12th to the 14th holes to help him finish the back nine on 20 points. The Division 1 winner Peter Rogers (2) with 38 points also claimed the accolade for the Best Gross. His round delivered seven pars and a birdie three on the index one fourth hole for 19 points on the front nine. His back nine included birdies at the par five 10th and par four 15th holes for three pointers along with a run of pars from the 16th to the 18th holes to finish with another 19 points. The other division winners were Malcolm Drake (18) with 39 points and Patrick Clarke (20) on 37 points. saw Peter Cunningham (18) with 48 points claiming the overall winner’s prize in the weekend 18 holes Singles Stableford competition. Peter followed his impressive start with a string of three pointers from the second to the fifth holes and added another three points on the par three ninth hole to turn on 25 points. On the back nine Peter parred the first three holes for a succession of three pointers and pars at the par four 14th and par three 17th added two more three pointers to see him complete the back nine on 23 points. Runner up was last year’s Captain, Noel Reid (21), on 44 points after a solid round that included a birdie three at the eighth hole for four points. Dennis Cunningham (10) with a one point better back nine edged out Kevin Redmond (11) for the Division 1 prize as both finished on 40 points. The other divisional honours went to Stephen Murphy (15) and Larry Curtin (22) The Bank Holiday Open Singles Stableford competition was won by Mark Cumiskey (10) with 42 points. His round included three pointers with pars at the first and third holes and a birdie at the par five sixth hole to turn on 20 points’ followed by a birdie t. His back nine included a birdie at par five 10th hole for three points and birdies at par five 12th and par four 15th for four pointers and a closing par for three points at the last to finish strongly on 22 points.
