The Captains’ Drive-In took place on Sunday, March 2 in front a large crowd as Captain Gerry McDermott, Lady Captain Sally McDonnell, Boys Captain Odhran MacShane and Girls Captain Mia McDermott hit their ceremonial shots after the traditional parade behind a piper to the first tee. All four got their drives away with nobody threatening the Out of Bounds that runs down the right from the tee box.
There were two competitions on the day, a four person team event in the morning and mixed foursomes competition in the afternoon which were sponsored by Fairways Supervalu.. The team event was won by David Cairns, Kenneth Cairns, Paul Mellon and Denis Cunningham who shot an excellent score 74pts over the 14 holes. They had three points to spare over the runners-up who were Sean Hession, Martin McDonnell, Eddie Sheridan and Charlie Monahan. Sean Hession was among the prize-winners in the Mixed Foursomes which was played over seven holes. Playing down the back side of the course partnered by his wife Mary he finished second behind Grace Zhang and Graeme Smith who shot a nett score of 23.6 to win by 1.2 from the Hessions with the Junior Captains, Odhran MacShane and Mia McDermott, missing out on the prizes by 0.2 of a shot. While the younger captains failed to make the prizes on the back side, their adult counterparts went one better on the front side. Captain Gerry McDermott and Lady Captain Sally McDonnell shot a nett 22 and saw Sally’s birdie putt lip out the last. They had to settle for second place behind Finola and John Oakes who shot an excellent 21 nett to take the top prize. Tickets are now on sale from the office for Eleanor Shanley and Mike Hanrahan in concert on Friday, April 4.
