This year Dundalk Ladies celebrated their 100th Lady Captains. To mark this momentous occasion, they had a social evening in the clubhouse on Friday, 24 May.

The evening began with a bubbly reception followed by a buffet. The prizes for this week’s competition were very generously sponsored by the O’Callaghan Family -Precision Cables Dundalk.

Honorary secretary  Noeleen Gernon  spoke about the 100 incredible women who stepped forward to serve as Lady Captain, each one leaving her own unique imprint on the fabric of the club. At the core of each and every one of these Lady  Captains was their passion for golf, also an  amazing foresight and ambition to improve life both golfing and social for all members of the club.

She spoke of the extraordinary progress over the decades and because of theses ladies hard work we now have full membership, tee times on a Saturday , a strong voice at the executive table all of which reflects not just equality in golf, but respect for the vital contribution of women in every aspect of our club.

But with all this change Dundalk Ladies have  held tightly to what makes Dundalk Golf Club so special. Traditions  like the Lady Captains Charity remain a cornerstone of the golfing year. Since 1992 every Lady Captain has championed causes close to their heart and raised thousands of euro for their local charities.

Noeleen also acknowledged the immense support each Lady Captain receives from her fellow committee members, the broader membership , her family, and friends. It is a spirit of unity that has kept the role strong and the club thriving.

A toast was raised to the 100 Lady Captains that brought us here and to our current Lady Captain Sally McDonnell.

John MacGuinness held off the challenge of Conor Byrne and Oisin Duff to win the Irwin Lockington Salver over the weekend of May 24 and 25.
Playing off 32, he was steadiness personified as he went out in 22pts and came home in 22pts for a score of 44pts that was one better than his two closest pursuers.
A purple patch midway through the back nine was key to victory for MacGuinness  as he picked up 11pts over three holes with a three-point bogey at the 14th followed by four point pars at the difficult 15th and 16th. His round also included seven three-point bogeys.
After shooting 18pts on the front nine, Conor Byrne (21) came charging through the field down the back nine with a four point birdie at the 17th as well as five three point pars and a three point bogey to come home in 25pts for an overall score of 43pts.
That was matched by Duff (20) who had one four par at the 11th and 10 three pointers but paid a high price for a blank on the par three ninth hole. Not only did it cost him overall victory, he also lost to out to Byrne on countback for the top prize in Division 3.
Richard Barry (12) won Division 1 on countback from Bernard Laverty (9) after both had shot 39pts while David Cairns (15) took Division 2 carded 40pts to take Division 2 by one point from Cathal Purcell (14).

Rafferty takes route 66 to sixth scratch cup victory

Defending champion Caolan Rafferty retained the One Finance Dundalk Scratch Cup thanks to a brilliant six-under par 66 in the second round of the 36 hole competition at a sun-drenched Dundalk Golf Club .
It gave him a four under par total of 140 and he finished four shots ahead of Co Louth’s Gerard Dunne with another Baltray player, Gavin Tiernan, a shot further back on one over.
Tiernan had led by one shot after the first round when he was the only player to break par over Dundalk’s tough championship course. He had four birdies at the third, 10th, 12th and 17th but bogeyed the fifth, 13th and 18th for a 71.
Dunne was a shot further behind on level par after an eagle three at the 12th and a birdie at the sixth and three bogeys at the third, eighth and 17th.
The two Baltray players were followed by four Dundalk members  as Aidan Lawless matched Dunne’s level par score with Neal MacKell on plus one while Ben Cahill and Rafferty were on plus two.
Rafferty had two bogeys at the par five seventh and 12th and 16 pars in a birdie free round but he made up for the lack of birdies in second round as he went on a charge that eventually yielded victory.
Down the front nine he had eight birdie opportunities and took three of them at second, sixth and seventh to go out in 33 and take a one shot lead into the back nine as Tiernan dropped three shots as a result of bogeys at the first, fifth, eighth and ninth and a birdie at the fourth.
Lawless also fell away after four bogeys on the opening nine leaving Rafferty’s playing partner Dunne to become his nearest challenger. He remained on level par thanks to back to back birdies at the sixth and seventh which were cancelled out by bogeys at the fifth and eighth.
Rafferty and Dunne both birdied the par five 10th and 12th to move to three under and two under respectively and they were level a hole later when Rafferty three putted from 90 feet for bogey.
He regained the lead when he birdied the par four 15th and extended his lead to three shots at the 16th where he sank a 15ft putt for birdie while Dunne three putted from the back of the green for a bogey.
Both Rafferty and Dunne found the trees off the tee on the last but the Dundalk man managed to save his par while Dunne bogeyed  to finish on level par, four shots behind Rafferty.
Tiernan took third on one over after a second round 74 while Dundalk youngster Ben Cahill and James O’Rourke from Naas finished on two over.
The win gives Rafferty his sixth victory in the competition and a massive confidence boost ahead of the defence of his East of Ireland Championship in Baltray over the June Bank Holiday Weekend.
