Gerry Farrell (31) had two four-point pars at the eighth and 18th holes on his way to winning the latest edition of the McKenna Man Open Singles Stableford competition last Wednesday.
Farrell’s total of 43pts also included three-point pars at the sixth, 13th and 17th. Gerard Brennan (4) shot the best gross and also won Division 1 while Padraig Hassett (14) and Cathal O’Brien (36) were the other divisional winners. Caolan Rafferty was beaten by a birdie on the final hole in the final of the South of Ireland Championship at Lahinch on Sunday.
Local hero Jonathon Keane two putted from the front of the green on the par five 18th to deliver the first home winner in 57 years and deny the Dundalk man his second win in the South. Rafferty, who won the South in 2018, had another great week over the famed County Clare links. He qualified for the matchplay stages in 16th place after rounds of 69 and 72 left him on three-under, four shots behind the leading qualifier, Dylan Keating of Seapoint. His clubmate, Ben Cahill, also made the top 64 as he finished 31st on 143 after rounds of 71 and 72 to once again underline his great potential. In the first round of matchplay Cahill beat Sean Barry of Fota Island 1up but then lost 6&5 to Galway veteran Joe Lyons in the last 32. Rafferty started the matchplay phase against Patrick Curran of Edmondstown and won 5&4 before beating Joe O’Neill of Berehaven by one hole to reach the last 16 where he had a 5&3 win over Monkstown’s Sean Desmond before dispatching Athenry’s David Kitt on a similar scoreline in the quarter-final. The semi-final paired Rafferty against Jake Whelan of The Grange and saw him record his third consecutive 5&3 win to reach the final where he faced Keane who was a 2&1 winner over Liam Abom of Edmondstown. Rafferty found himself two down after four holes and was still two down with four to play but won the 15th and 16th to draw level. After a half on 17, it all came down to the last where, watched by a large partisan crowd, Keane got finally got the job done after been pushed all the way by the Dundalk man. Ben Cahill and Caolan Rafferty have qualified for the matchplay rounds of the South of Ireland Amateur Open Championship in Lahinch.

Playing off 19. Carroll shot a nett 63 while Pepper, off 24, recorded a nett 64 as 48 of the 261 players in the field shot below the nett par of 72. Carroll went out in 31 nett thanks to pars at the second, fifth, sixth, eighth and ninth and came home in 32 nett following a birdie four at the 10th and pars at the 11th, 12th and 18th. Pepper covered both nines in 32 nett with his six pars coming at the first, fifth, sixth, 10th , 13th and 15th and he just couldn’t find the extra par he needed down the stretch to take overall victory. Conall Murdock had five birdies on his way to shooting a three-under par 69 to claim the Gross Prize while Paul Matthews (38) shot a nett 68 to win the Veteran’s Prize. Senan Duffy (9), Paul O’Callaghan (14) and Danny Woods (21) took the Division honours. In the Junior Cup, there was an impressive win over Baltray with Katie Rowland and Ellen McEneaney winning their matches at home 5&3 and 6&4 respectively. Pauline Campbell's match went right down to the wire before she emerged victorious on 18. There was a trojan effort from Bernie McCabe and Elaine Ward who both managed to half their away matches. The Senior Cup panel will now advance to the North Leinster semi final to be played before 20 July. The Challenge Trophy team had a convincing win over Greenore to set up a clash with Ardee on Thursday 10 July. Meanwhile the Intermediate Foursomes panel had a well deserved win against Rathcore. They now advance to face Westmanstown in their North Leinster semi final on Friday 12 July at 3pm. While the Senior Foursomes were defeated by a strong Headfort side, our Senior Cup team had a fantastic win over Royal Tara to set up a semi final against The Island to be played before 20 July. Katie Rowland put in a tremendous performance and was 8 up thru 9 holes before winning on 11. There were away wins for Criona O'Reilly and Ellen McEneaney. What this all means is that the Ladies will have three teams in semi finals in July!
