A strong finish with straight pars on the final three closing holes saw Conor Murray
(13) with a nett 68 just edge out close competition to win President Gerry Campbell’s prize in the weekend 18 holes stroke play competition. Conor set out his intentions early with birdies at the par four first and par five seventh holes while sprinkling his outward nine with pars at the third, fifth and ninth holes to reach the turn in nett 35. On the back nine, after parring the par five 10th and 12th holes he added another par at the 14th before finishing in style with straight pars at the par four 16th and 18th holes and par three 17th hole to come home in nett 33. His strong finish just edged out Seanan Duffy (10) who had to settle for the runner-up position after carding nett 34’s on both nines to also finish on nett 68. His round was highlighted with birdies at the par five sixth and 10th holes and par three 13th. A clear indication of the intensity of competition over the two days was evident from the fact that the three divisional winners, Edward Rogers (5), Neil Smyth (15) and Alan Uzell (22), as well as Veterans prize winner Austin Shaw (7), all finished on nett 69. A memorable back nine surge of a birdie and eight pars propelled Shane McMahon (7) from Warrenpoint Golf Club to victory in the mid-week Open Singles Stableford Competition sponsored by McKenna Man with 43 points. Shane started his outward nine in impressive style with three straight pars before adding a birdie four at the sixth hole and tagged on straight pars from the seventh to the ninth holes to reach the turn on 21 points. He maintained his solid, consistent scoring on the closing nine, birding the par five 10th hole for three points and adding a combination of three pointers and two pointers with pars on the remaining eight holes to come home in 22 points. Runner up Christy Ward (9), with 42 points, parred the first hole for three points and added a run of three pointers from the sixth to the eighth holes to turn on 21 points. Two early birdies at the par four first and fourth holes and a solid run of nett pars from the fifth to the ninth set Brian Fennelly (9) on his way to a convincing win in the weekend Jubilee Cup & 3T’s 18 holes stroke play competition.
His impressive outward run saw him turn on nett 30 and he maintained his consistency for most of the back nine with straight pars on six holes and a birdie three at the par four 14th hole to come home in nett 33. His final tally of nett 63 saw him finish three shots ahead of his nearest contenders. The divisional winners were Rory Henry (7), Conor Monahan (18) and Colm Coburn (25). Back-to-back birdies for four pointers at the par four 14th and 15th holes proved to be decisive scores in Paul O’Reilly (20) emerging as the winner of the midweek McKenna Man Open Singles Stableford competition with an overall 42 points. After opening his round with a par four on the first hole for three points, he added a brace of three pointers with further pars at the par three fifth and par five sixth holes to reach the turn on 18 points. On the closing nine he complimented his two birdies with three pointers at the par four 11th and 16th holes and par three 13th hole to boost his score to 24 points and a final tally of 42 points. A back nine surge that included six three pointers and a birdie for four points saw Ciaran McAteer (20) emerge as clear winner of the weekend House Committee Cup Singles Stableford Competition with 45 points.
His outward nine started in spectacular fashion with an eagle two at the par four first hole for five points and he went on to score solidly with a three pointer at the par four fourth followed by a consistent run of two pointers from the fifth to the ninth to turn in 20 points. Ciaran went on a scoring spree on the back nine, with four three pointers in a row from the 10th to the 13th holes before beefing up his score further with a birdie three at the 14th hole for four points and parring the 17th and 18th holes for three pointers to come home in 25 points. The divisional winners were Paul Malone (12) 43pts, Ciaran Flanagan (18) 42pts and Paul Culligan (28) 43pts. Dundalk Golf Club captured the Leinster North Junior Cup title and a place in the All-Ireland series with a hard-fought win over The Island in Greenore on Saturday.
It was second time in three years that Dundalk have won the Leinster North Junior Cup pennant having secured it in 2022. The match was decided on the 19th when player-manager Brian Óg Renaghan beat Mark Smith to secure the winning point much to the delight of the large crowd of Dundalk supporters. Renaghan exemplified the fighting qualities and strong character of the Dundalk team who hung in when things weren’t going their way and they eventually prevailed in a match where the standard of golf was of the highest quality. On their way to the final Dundalk had beaten Ardee, Kilcock, Beaverstown and Corballis but The Island gave them their toughest test to date with two matches decided on the 19th, one on the 18th , one of the 17th and one on the 16th. In the top match Conor Murphy led the way perfectly for Dundalk. Three up after five holes against Cillian Hurley he always maintained at least a two-shot lead and was dormie three when he lost the 16th. However, he eventually put the first point on the board when he halved the 17th to win 2&1. The Island’s Damian Rogers also managed to get his nose front early against Fergal Harte and never relinquished his lead despite the best efforts of the Dundalk man. They eventually shook hands on the 16th as Rogers claimed a 3&2 win in the fourth match. At that stage the overall match was very much in the balance. In the second match teenager Odhran MacShane was involved a high quality scrap with Adam McGettrick and there was never more than hole between them as they moved around the excellent Greenore links. McGettrick had his nose in front for much of the back nine before MacShane won 16 and 17 to take a one shot lead down the last. But he over-cooked his approach to the 18th and ended having to take a penalty drop for an unplayable lie which cost him the hole and sent the match down the 19th. But, MacShane showed tremendous character to bounce back from that setback and win the first play-off hole to leave Dundalk with two chances to secure victory. In the third match Brian Óg Reneaghan had found himself three down after five holes against mark Smith who was the lowest handicap player on the Dublin team. But a win on the par three sixth got him back to two down and he was one down by the time they turned for home. A dogged Reneaghan continued to hang in until the 17th when one to bring the match to all square for the first time and after halving the 18th he won the 19th to find himself for the first time and the most important time. Seconds before Renaghan sealed the deal on 19, Clem Walshe had lost on the 18th to the big hitting Matthew Burke after a tremendous battle. There was never more than a hole between the pair but when Burke got up and down to win 16th and then smashed a drive down the 17th he looked to be in driving seat. However, Walshe responded with an eagle to win the 17th but another monster drive on the last set up Burke for a par and a one hole win but it proved to be a consolation point for The Island as Renaghan delivered the winning point for Dundalk. The Leinster North pennant was presented to Dundalk’s assistant manager Des McKeown by the Chairperson of the Leinster Regional Executive Siobhan O'Donnell-Murphy. Dundalk now head for the All-Ireland finals which will be held in Athlone on Friday, September 6 and Saturday, September 7 where they will face either Rossmore or Royal County Down in the quarter-Finals. Dundalk 3 The Island 2 – (Dundalk names first): Conor Murphy bt Cillian Hurley 3&2, Odhran MacShane bt Adam McGettrick 19th, Brian Óg Renaghan bt Mark Smith 19th, Fergal Harte lost to Damian Rogers 3&2, Clem Walshe lost to Matthew Burke 1 hole. Eamon McEneaney held off the challenge of Paul O’Reilly to win Ultan Herr’s Captain’s Prize in tough conditions on Sunday afternoon.
McEneaney, playing off 18, led the field into the final round after shooting a 65 nett in the qualifying round the previous weekend. Four pars and birdie on the front nine saw him go out in 31 nett and three more pars down the back nine saw him come home in 34 nett to finish on seven under par nett. As a former senior inter-county footballer and manager, McEneaney had plenty of big game experience to draw on as he teed off in the final group and he opened with six solid bogeys before dropping a shot with a double bogey at the seventh. However, he got that back with a birdie on the ninth to turn in 35 nett and a par at the 11th and a birdie at the 14th saw him move to 11 under par nett for the competition. Disaster struck at the difficult par four 15th, which was playing into a three-club wind. He walked off with a 10 and dropped to six under par nett opening the door for O’Reilly who had started the day on two-under nett but turned on one-under par nett. Playing off 23, O’Reilly was burning up the back nine having parred 11, 12, 13 and 16 to move to seven under nett but he dropped back to six under-nett after a double bogey six at the last. That left him tied with McEneaney, who was still out on the course. McEneaney, drawing on all his experiences, showed great character in responding to his disaster at the 15th by finishing bogey-par-bogey to move to seven-under par nett and nudge ahead of O’Reilly to claim his first Captain’s Prize. Paul O’Callaghan (14) was a shot further back in third after an excellent four under par 68 in the second round edging out Mark McDonnell and Ross Kehoe on countback for that podium place. Caolan Rafferty with rounds of 69 and 73 was the gross winner in 142, six ahead of Ben Cahill while Frank Byrne (15) took the Veteran’s Prize and George Rogers (28) claimed the Super Veteran’s Prize. The prizes were presented by Captain Ultan Herr in a packed Clubhouse on Sunday evening with many tributes being paid to the Captain for his leadership and contribution during the year. A storming outward nine of solid scoring for 24 points set Paul O’Hare (36) well on his way towards taking the top prize in the weekend Singles Stableford Competition with a final tally of 41 points.
He started his scoring run early with a par four on the first hole for four points and followed on with a run of three pointers from the third to the sixth holes before adding another three points at the par three ninth to reach the turn on 24 points. O’Hare had an up and down back nine but pars at the par three 13th and par four 14th holes for four pointers and a three pointer at the par four 14th hole helped him garner 17 points which was enough to get him over the finishing line. Low handicapper Christopher Clarke (3) came closest to the winner with 40 points but had to settle for winning the Division 1 category. He had an evenly balanced round of 20 points on both nines, highlighted on the front nine by birdies at the par five sixth and seventh holes and par three ninth . He went on to birdie the par five 12th and par four 14th and 16th holes. The other divisional winners were Vincent Jackson (13) with 39 points and Alan Uzell (22) also on 39 points.
