An impressive start on the front nine that included a par four at the first for three
points, followed by a one over at the par four second hole for two points and a birdie three on the third hole for four points set Andrew Brodigan, playing off a handicap of 14, on his way to eventually emerging winner of the midweek Open Singles Stableford competition, sponsored by McKenna Man, with 42 points. Andrew built on his good start to go on to record five two pointers and three points with a par five at the seventh hole to reach the turn on 22 points. His back nine was equally consistent, collecting three pointers with pars at the 11 th , 15 th and 17 th holes and holding his score solidly together with five two pointers to finish the closing nine with 20 points. Andrew’s better back nine just squeezed out Sean Matthews (13) who also finished on 42 points but had to settle for the Division 1 winner’s prize, coming up just one short with 19 points on the closing nine. For Sean it was a case of what might have been, after a stuttering start with one point on the opening hole he then set off on a blistering scoring spree, carding four three pointers in a row including pars at the par four second, third and fourth holes, a birdie two at the fifth hole, followed by another birdie at the water protected par five seventh hole for four points, to reach the turn on 23 points. He battled hard on the back nine, parring the 12th, 16th and 18th holes for three pointers but lapses in between saw him finish the closing nine on 19 points. The other two divisional winners were Eamon Hoey (22) and David Corrigan (36). A solid evenly balanced round of 20 points on both nines was enough to get
Caoimhin O’Callaghan, playing off a 28 handicap, over the line to take the winners prize in the weekend Cathedral Finance Autumn 18 holes Singles Stableford competition. He set out with three two pointers on the opening holes, built on that consistent start with a one over five at the par four index one fourth hole for three points and boosted his climbing score further with three points at the par five sixth and par four eighth. Despite stumbling a bit at the par three ninth where he had a five for one point, O’Callaghan still reached the turn on 20 points. He maintained his consistent accumulating of points well into the homeward nine with three two pointers and one three pointer from the 10th to the 13th holes, tagged on another three points at the par four 16th hole before finishing in style with a par four at the 18th hole for four points to come home with 20 points. Pearse Murphy, playing off a 14 handicap, also had 40 points, 20 on each nine, but had to settle for the runners-up prize after a countback. His scoring never dipped below two points, he had seven of them and two three pointers on the outward nine and repeated that scoring pattern on the back nine. Division 3 winner Michael Hamilton (22) also finished on 40 points and had a memorable opening nine, parring the par four first hole for three points and accumulating five more three pointers to reach the turn on a highly impressive 23 points. He battled to keep that level of scoring momentum going on the back nine with one pointers at the 15th and 16th holes taking from his otherwise solid return of six two pointers and a par four for three points at the 14th hole. The Division 1 winner was Bobby McCarthy (10) while the Division 2 prize went to Richard Smyth (16). The Juvenile Presentation Night takes place this Friday, November 1, at 6pm in the Clubhouse while the Men’s Presentation Night will be on Saturday, November 9 at 7.30pm.
There was a big crowd in the Clubhouse this evening for the announcement of the Gents and Ladies Presidents, Vice Captains and Junior Captains for 2025 by incoming captains Sally McDonnell and Gerry McDermott.
The new Presidents will be Oonagh Quinn and Eddie Rogers, the Vice-Captains will be Leone Smyth Baillie and Michael O’Sullivan while the Junior Captains are Mia McDermott and Odhran MacShane. With a round that included some spectacular scoring, mingled with struggles to record one pointers at some holes, Danny Gallagher, playing off a 19 handicap, emerged as the overall winner with 43 points of the weekend Cathedral Finance Autumn Winter 18 Holes Singles Stableford Competition.
While benign weather conditions made play enjoyable on the Saturday, by Sunday Storm Ashley unleashed its full gale force winds making conditions considerably more daunting so, it was not surprising that Gallagher was one of those who played on the Saturday. After a six for one point at the opening par four first hole, Danny quickly got into his stride with a brace of two pointers at the next two holes, a par for four points at the toughest hole on the course, the index 1 par four fourth hole, and then tagged on three pointers with pars at the par five sixth , par four eighth and par three ninth holes to finish his outward nine with 22 points. After faltering for one point on the par five 10 th hole, Danny went on a scoring spree with four three pointers in a row from the 11th to the 14th holes, then dipped a little, before finishing in style with a par four on the 18th for another three points to come home with 21 points. Vincent Jackson (11) had to settle for the runners up prize on 42 points. He had a very impressive outward nine that included three three-pointers, five two-pointers and four points with a birdie at the par five seventh hole, to turn on 23 points. He battled hard on the closing nine, parring six of the holes, to come home in 19 points, but his final overall tally just came up one point short. The divisional winners were Sean McErlean (13), Barry Grennan (17) and Conor Murphy (24). The gross recognition prize went to Colin Roche with 34 points. Despite having three blanks on his card, Dunne did enough to take the overall prizes as he notched four points at the 16th and three points at the first, fourth, fifth, sixth, 11th and 12th. Brendan Rogers (13) took Division 1, Warrenpoint’s Damien McCann (19) won Division2 and Patrick Mulroy (38) topped Division 3. A better back nine proved crucial for Jim Dwyer as he won the latest series in the Cathedral Financial Autumn Winter Series over the weekend of October 12 and 13.
Dwyer, playing off 11, and Brian Whately, playing off 26, both finished on 41pts but Dwyer outscored Whately 20pts to 17 down the back nine to take the overall prize on countback. Dwyer went out in 21pts thanks to three consecutive three point returns at the third, fourth and fifth holes with the par three fifth yielding a birdie. Back to back three pointers followed at the 11th and 12th but a blank at the 13th after a double bogey five left Dwyer under pressure. However, he bounced back at the very next hole with a birdie three for three points and he added another three points at the 18th to come in 20pts. Whately had charged out of the traps and covered the front nine in 24pts thanks to four pointers at the fourth and eighth and three pointers at the first, third, seventh and ninth. But he faltered on the run for home with a blank at the 14th and one pointer on the 11th and, even though he had three points on the 12th and 17th, he could only come home in 17pts and ended up losing on countback. David Murden (11), Oisin McBride (16) and Stephen Fitzpatrick (19) were the divisional winners while Caolan Rafferty had the best gross score with 39pts. The annual DunGreen Cup match between Dundalk and Greenore took place last Thursday in Dundalk and saw the home side reclaim the trophy on a score of 302pts to 281pts which was based on the combined top eight scores from each club.
Top scorers for Dundalk were John Duffin and Eamonn Kelly who shot 41pts each while Sean Dullaghan with 38pts and Padraig Sharkey with 36pts were best for Greenore. The various club matchplay competitions have now concluded and the presentations will take place on Saturday, November 9.
After beating Sean Hession in the semi-final Denis Cunningham won the Gold Medal with a win over Captain’s Prize winner Eamonn McEneaney. McEneaney had defeated Gary O’Brien in his semi-final. In the semi-finals of the Carolan Cup Aidan Thornton beat Sean Gallagher while Richard Copas defeated Cameron Kilcoyne and it was Thornton who came out on top in the final. That deprived Copas of a unique matchplay treble as he beat Conor Byrne in the Harry Walsh Cup final and then partnered Malcom Drake to beat Mark Gorham and Tony McGuinness in the final of the Gents Foursomes. Captain Ultan Herr and his wife Deborah beat Maura Coyle and Vincent Conlon to win the Club Mixed Foursomes Visitor Gavin Erasmus, a 24 handicapper from Mannan Castle, won last Wednesday’s McKenna Man Open Singles Stableford on countback from Padraig Hassett after both had tied on 38pts.
Despite blanking his opening two holes, Erasmus went out in 17pts helped by three point returns at the third, fifth and eighth. He shot 21pts down the back nine with a four-point par at the 15th and back to back three-point pars at the 10th and 11th. Hassett, who was playing off 14, had a solid round, out in 19pts and back in 19pts with a round that included six three-pointers, one of which was for a birdie four at the par five sixth. Hassett took Division 1 while Danny Gallagher (19) won Division 2 and Eugene Hanratty (28) claimed Division 3. Ciaran Johnston with 35pts had the best gross.
