A better back nine proved crucial for Jim Dwyer as he won the latest series in the Cathedral Financial Autumn Winter Series over the weekend of October 12 and 13.
Dwyer, playing off 11, and Brian Whately, playing off 26, both finished on 41pts but Dwyer outscored Whately 20pts to 17 down the back nine to take the overall prize on countback. Dwyer went out in 21pts thanks to three consecutive three point returns at the third, fourth and fifth holes with the par three fifth yielding a birdie. Back to back three pointers followed at the 11th and 12th but a blank at the 13th after a double bogey five left Dwyer under pressure. However, he bounced back at the very next hole with a birdie three for three points and he added another three points at the 18th to come in 20pts. Whately had charged out of the traps and covered the front nine in 24pts thanks to four pointers at the fourth and eighth and three pointers at the first, third, seventh and ninth. But he faltered on the run for home with a blank at the 14th and one pointer on the 11th and, even though he had three points on the 12th and 17th, he could only come home in 17pts and ended up losing on countback. David Murden (11), Oisin McBride (16) and Stephen Fitzpatrick (19) were the divisional winners while Caolan Rafferty had the best gross score with 39pts.
