MEN'S SECTION Boys Captain Ben Cahill was the winner of last Wednesday’s McKenna Man Open Singles Stableford competition with an excellent score of 43pts which was four clear of a group of players on 39pts. Cahill, who played off two, also recorded the best gross score with 41pts. Category prizes were won by Eoin Purton (2), Sean Matthews (17) and visitor Ruairí McComish (26) from Greenore. This week’s competition, the Knights of Malta Cup, will be the tenth and final Golfer of the Year competition. The Golfer of the Year will be awarded to the member with the best seven scores from the 10 competitions and the top four in each handicap index category will go on to play for the IJM Scratch Matchplay Cups. The finals of the IJM Scratch matchplays are scheduled to take place on Saturday, September 16. The GOY award and the Scratch Matchplay competitions are Kindly sponsored by IJM and Peter McCaughey. The Junior Scratch Cup will take place on Sunday, August 27 and the Senior Scratch Cup is fixed for Sunday, September 10. Both will be played over 36 holes. LADIES SECTION Lady Captain, Briege Renaghan’s Charity Team Competition was played in glorious conditions on Tuesday, August 8. The competition was very generously sponsored by One Finance, and was played in aid of SOSAD, who work tirelessly to raise awareness and help prevent suicide in Ireland. They offer care and support to those in need in our community and their free professional services include counselling, crisis support and a 24 hour helpline. The scoring was high, with 92 points required to take first place. Very well done to the winning team of Mary Meegan, Angie O’Hara, Joanne Lynch and Aine Kirk. They were three points ahead of the runners up Elaine Ward, Grainne Mullins, Mary Dooley and Siobhan Kearney. In third place, a point further behind, was Teresa Oakes, Geraldine Hoare, Paula McKeown and Catherine Connolly. A nine hole Gents competition was held in the evening and, along with numerous raffles, in excess of €7,000 was raised for this most worthy of causes. Carol Murphy, Director of SOSAD, spoke of the Trojan work they do, and thanked the members of Dundalk Golf Club and the sponsors, One Finance, for making this event such a success.
