With a round that included some spectacular scoring, mingled with struggles to record one pointers at some holes, Danny Gallagher, playing off a 19 handicap, emerged as the overall winner with 43 points of the weekend Cathedral Finance Autumn Winter 18 Holes Singles Stableford Competition.
While benign weather conditions made play enjoyable on the Saturday, by Sunday Storm Ashley unleashed its full gale force winds making conditions considerably more daunting so, it was not surprising that Gallagher was one of those who played on the Saturday. After a six for one point at the opening par four first hole, Danny quickly got into his stride with a brace of two pointers at the next two holes, a par for four points at the toughest hole on the course, the index 1 par four fourth hole, and then tagged on three pointers with pars at the par five sixth , par four eighth and par three ninth holes to finish his outward nine with 22 points. After faltering for one point on the par five 10 th hole, Danny went on a scoring spree with four three pointers in a row from the 11th to the 14th holes, then dipped a little, before finishing in style with a par four on the 18th for another three points to come home with 21 points. Vincent Jackson (11) had to settle for the runners up prize on 42 points. He had a very impressive outward nine that included three three-pointers, five two-pointers and four points with a birdie at the par five seventh hole, to turn on 23 points. He battled hard on the closing nine, parring six of the holes, to come home in 19 points, but his final overall tally just came up one point short. The divisional winners were Sean McErlean (13), Barry Grennan (17) and Conor Murphy (24). The gross recognition prize went to Colin Roche with 34 points.
