A par four on the opening hole for three points, with the addition of three pointers from pars at the par threes fifth and ninth and par five seventh holes set Charlie Monahan, playing off a 12 handicap, on his way with 33 points to claiming the winner’s prize in the weekend Cathedral Financial Autumn Series Singles Stableford competition played over 14 holes.
The rest of his outward nine was interspersed with three two pointers and two single points to see him reach the turn on 20 points.
His score on the closing five holes was boosted with a birdie two at the 13th for four points, a par five at the 12th for three points and solid two pointers on the other three holes to finish the back five with 13 points.
His better scoring on the final five holes just edged out low handicapper Connor McCaughey, playing off four, who also finished on 33 points but had to settle for the runners up prize as well as the best gross accolade.
Connor had an impressive outward nine, accumulating six two pointers and spiced it up considerable with a birdie on the par four second hole for three points, followed by another three pointer with a par four on the third hole and a birdie three at the index one fourth hole for four points to finish his opening nine on 22 points.
After birding the par five 10th hole for three points and picking up another three points with a par four at the 11th his momentum stalled on the remaining three holes as he finished with 11 points for the four holes.
The divisional winners were Tony McGuinness (7), Patrick Clarke (16) and Seamus Kelly (16).
This was the last round of the Cathedral Finance Autumn Series and the overall winner was Gerry Byrne. He received his prize from sponsor Cormac Malone at last Saturday’s Presentation Night in the Clubhouse which drew a very large crowd.
