The Provincial Towns Cup came up short in the second leg of the final against Coollattin on Saturday when they failed to overturn the 4-3 lead which the Wicklow club took home with them from last month’s first leg in Dundalk.
They got off to the best possible start when Des McKeown won the top match on the 19th but then saw Odhran MacShane and Trevor Giff lose on the 18th. When Paul O’Callaghan and Brendan Keane lost their matches, Coollattin had secured the eight points they needed to secure the title. In the bottom two matches John Paul Casey was all square after 15 and John McKeever was one up after 14 when they were called in. While it was disappointing not to bridge the gap to the club’s last Provincial Town’s cup win in 1984, it was a great run by the Derek Murdock and Mickey Coburn managed team and there is plenty to build on for next year.
