Super Back nine sees McCaughey win house committee cup

A super back nine helped Martin McCaughey to win the House Committee Cup over the weekend of August 15 and 16 as he won countback after four players had shot rounds of 67 nett.
Playing off 26, McCaughey had gone out in 50 gross without managing to record a par over the opening nine. But he righted that down the back with three successive pars from the 12th hole and a fourth at par three 17th as he came home in 43 gross.
Brian Mernagh, playing off (16) went out in 42 gross thanks to three pars and a birdie at the seventh. He came home in 41 gross with pars at the 10th and 14th followed by birdies at the 16th and 18th.
While his back nine nett score of 33 wasn’t good enough to match McCaughey’s 30, it was enough to pip Paul Morgan (18) for first place in Division 2. Morgan’s nett back nine of 36 included a double bogey at the 14th and a triple bogey at the 18th.   
Waite, who was off 13, shot a gross score of 80. He raced out of the traps and covered the front nine in 37 gross thanks to back-to-back birdies at the sixth and seventh and four pars. Another birdie followed at the 10th but double bogeys at the 12th and 18th cost him the overall victory.
He took the Division 1 honours from Seamus Bailey (12) while Ray Pepper (21) with a 68 nett took Division 3 on a last six countback from Willie McKeever (21).
Caolan Rafferty had six birdies at the third, sixth, ninth, 10th 16th and 17th on his way to a three under par 69 and the best gross score of the competition while Charlie Monahan was celebrating after a hole in one at the 17th.
