Oisin Cairns produced a superb round of 65 nett to win Leslie Walker’s Professional’s Prize by two shots from Mark Thornton over the weekend of June 13 and 14.
Playing off 22 Cairns started with a double bogey and bogey before holing the first of his five pars at the par four third. A bogey at the index one fourth was followed by back to back pars at the fifth and sixth holes and three bogeys to the ninth saw him turn in 44 gross which was 33 nett. He started the back nine with three successive bogeys before parring the par three 13th. That was followed by back to back bogeys before another par at the long 16th. He finished with two bogeys to come home in 43 gross which was a nett 32 and left him with a 65 nett and overall victory. His nearest challenger for overall honours turned out to be Thornton who was playing off 32 and shot 99 gross for a nett score of 67. His round included four pars at the sixth, 15th, 16th and 18th. Conor Curran took the Gross Prize after a round of 74 which included birdies at the 10th and 14th while the Veteran’s Prize went to Peter Rogers (4) who recorded one birdie and 14 pars for a nett score of 71. The evergreen Clem Walshe (6) shot 71 nett to take Division 1 by one shot from Eoghan McKenna (4) and Robert White (3) while Division 2 went to Jordan Keating (19) on countback after he and Anthony Tuite (15) had both shot 68 nett. Tommy Lennon (32) was the Division 3 winner with a 68 nett. The Professional’s Prize attracted an entry of 288 golfers over the two days and the presentations were made on Sunday evening in the Clubhouse.
