Early starter Cumiskey wins Knights of Malta Cup

Andrew Cumiskey won the Knights of Malta Cup on Sunday when he shot a four under par 68 on the club’s formidable Blue course in what was the penultimate round of the Golfer of the Year competition.

The 15 handicapper had one shot to spare over Billy Cairns (5) as Zak Alderdice (4), Pat McGuinness (15) and Noel McGuinness (129) took the category prizes.

Playing in the second group of the day, Cumiskey opened with a par at the first and then reeled off three bogeys followed by three successive pars and finished the front nine with bogeys at eight and nine to turn in 33 nett.

His only double bogey of the day came on the par five tenth but he bounced back with a par on the index two 11th and then added further pars at the 13th, 16th and 18th to come home in 35 nett and claim the overall prize.

Senior Panel member Conor Curran (1) was in fine form over the weekend as he shot 38pts to win Saturday’s Singles Stableford and then shot 70 on Sunday to win the Gross Prize in the Knights of Malta Cup. Conal Mullin (21) was another player who had a good weekend as he won the Juvenile Prize in both weekend competitions.

Teenager Zak Alderdice (5) continued his recent fine run by shooting 42pts to win Wednesday’s Open Singles Stableford competition which was sponsored by Deluxe Bathroom and Tiling.

Among those he left in his wake was Walker Cup player Caolan Rafferty (+6) who warmed up for this week’s event in Hoylake by shooting 39pts to record the best gross score.

On Sunday, Alderdice, now playing off four, shot a two under par 70 to take the Category 1 prize in the Knights of Malta Cup.

Rogers takes Knights of Malta Cup

Eddie Rogers won the final cup of the season on Sunday when he shot the only sub-par round of the day to capture the Knights of Malta Cup.

Playing off four, Rogers shot a one-under par 71 to edge out Ciaran Daly (18) and Trevor Giff (11) by one shot on a day when slick greens and a strong wind provided a stern test for the 160 strong field.

Rogers went through the opening nine holes in level par gross as he shot seven pars, a birdie and a bogey with the birdie coming at the par three ninth.

More birdies followed at the par five 10th, and par three 13th but as the wind picked up the going got tougher and he bogeyed the 11th, 14th, 15th and 18th to come home in 39 gross. That gave him a gross score of 75 and a nett score of 71 and set an early clubhouse lead that wasn’t bettered.

Daly edged out Giff on countback to take second overall with the latter winning Category 2 while Terry Conlon (6) and Derek Teather (16) took Categories 1 and 3 respectively. Padraig Greenan claimed the Juvenile Prize while Senior Panel member Neal MacKell (2) took the Gross Prize with a 74.

Sizzling back nine wins Knights of Malta Cup for Laverty

Four handicapper Sean Laverty one of the members of the club’s Leinster title winning Fred Daly Trophy team, lifted the Knights of Malta Cup on Sunday on countback from Michael Keating (16), Aidan Thornton (8) and Tom Clarke (17),

All three finished with scores of three under par, 69, but Laverty’s back nine of 32 was enough to give him the overall prize with Keating taking the runners up spot. There was some consolation for Thornton and Clarke as they won category one and three respectively. Eddie Rogers, off three, took the gross prize with a 73.

After eight holes of his round few would have bet on Laverty being in the final shake-up as a double bogey six at the fourth and bogies at the first and eighth meant he was standing at three over par nett when he stood on the ninth tee.

But he then birdied the par three hole and that kick-started his round as he reeled off another two birdies down the back nine as well as seven pars to cover the home stretch in 34 gross and 32 nett and that was enough to pip Keating for the overall prize.

Sunday, August 6 – Knights Of Malta Cup – Overall: Sean Laverty (4) 69/32, Michael Keating (16) 69/33. Gross: Eddie Rogers (3) 73. Category 1 (0 -11): Aidan Thornton (8) 69, Connor McCaughey (5) 70/34.5. Category 2 (12-17): Tom Clarke (17) 69, Pat Hoey (13) 70/33.5. Category 3 (18-28): Ciaran Daly (18) 70, Hugh Reilly (21)73.
