McLaughlin burns it up to win Oriel Cup

John McLaughlin, playing off 24, won the Oriel Cup, sponsored by Laverty Motor Factors, with an excellent score of 64.

He had two shots to spare over Declan Muckian (10) with Shane Murphy (17) a shot further back after a 67. 

McLaughlin got off to a great start with three pars from the first four holes and then had back to back bogeys at the the next two before a bogey at the eighth was sandwiched between double bogeys at the seventh and ninth.

That saw him go out in 44 gross which was 32 nett and he repeated that score down the back nine as he recorded pars at the 13th, 14th and 17th and double bogeys at the 12th and 15th. 

On Thursday, 37 teams took part in the Open Four Person Team Event sponsored by National Tile which was won by a quartet from Greenore who carded an impressive 99pts that was five better than the home team of Brian Ward, Paul O’Callaghan, Sean Hession and Michael Hamilton.
