Rogers wins Leinster Over-65 title

 Peter Rogers winning the Over-65 category at the Leinster Senior Men’s Championship in Rosslare.

Rogers produced three birdies over the closing three holes of his final round to beat Woodbrook’s John L Hughes by one shot. Rogers shot rounds of 78 and 76 for a final total of +10 and also finished T23 overall.

Clem Walshe had been joint leader of the 60-64 category after shooting a one over par 73 that included three birdies but he finished T9 after an 85 in the second round

Caolan Rafferty finished 25th in the defence of his West of Ireland title at Rossess Point over the weekend while Eoin Murphy missed the cut and Jason Murphy failed to make it through the qualifying round.

McCaughey bounces back for impressive victory

Peter McCaughey (20) won Sunday’s 14 Hole Singles Stablefordcompetition with an excellent score of 34pts.

But thoughts of victory were far from his mind after he walkedoff the first hole having failed to score.

A two point bogey at the secondgot him on the board and pars at the next three holes yielded a haul of 10ptswhich put him right back in the competition.

A two point bogey at the par five sixth was followed bythree point pars at the seventh and eighth before he finished the front ninewith a two point bogey for an impressive 22pts heading into the final fourholes.

Two points were gained at both the 10th and 11thbefore he parred the par five 12th for three points and bogeyed thepar three 13th for two points.

He then jumped from the 13th to the 18th for the 14th hole of his round and a three point par on the last was enough to take McCaughey beyond three players who finished up on 33pts and give him the overall victory.

Mickey Coburn (10) was one of those on 34pts and he tookCategory 1 by a point from Charlie Monahan (10) while Brian Crombie (19) needed a countback that went back to the final two holes before he edged out GerryByrne (19) after both had finished on 33pts in Category 2.

Conor Byrne (21) took Category 3 with 32pts from AnthonyMcGuinness (20) who finished with 31pts while the evergreen Peter Rogers wentaround in 28pts for the day’s best gross score.

Mernagh pips Rogers in Jubilee Cup

Peter Rogers was pipped for Sunday’s Jubilee Cup as he lost out on countback to Liam Mernagh (13) despite shooting a nett 67 off a handicap of two.

Mernagh had got off to a good start with pars at the first and third but handed them back when he had a triple bogey seven at the index one fourth. However, he bounced back with successive pars at the fifth and sixth followed by another at the eighth and then a birdie two at the ninth for a nett front nine of 33.

More pars followed down the back nine at 10, 12, 13, 15 and 17 and 18 and the only blemish was two dropped shots at the short par four 14th. He came home in 34 nett for an overall score of five under 67 and beat Rogers on countback.

Aaron Grant (+2) took the Gross Prize with a superb five under par 67 in the first grouping of the day while the category prizes went to Conor McCaughey (5), Conor Hackett (12) and Johannes Steenvooden (24)
