Locality
Dundalk Golf Club is situated in County Louth on the east coast of Ireland. The course is a traditional Irish parkland experience in the middle of the great golfing corridor between Portmarnock and Royal County Down Golf Clubs. The course is situated above the seaside village of Blackrock, on the southern side of Dundalk town, just off the M1 motorway and 40 minutes from Dublin Airport.
Blackrock (Irish: Na Creagacha Dubha) is an attractive seaside village. The small settlement that would eventually become Blackrock was first noted in the “Book of Dundalk” in 1752. Blackrock has its origins as a tiny fishing village in the early 1800’s. By 1845, with increasing visitors to the area, local landlord Thomas Fortescue was prompted to undertake the construction of the gorgeous promenade as well as the building of the Blackrock Hotel, The Clermont Arms and The Swans Hostelry. This was the beginning of Blackrock’s rapid development as a popular holiday resort, attracting visitors from all neighbouring counties and even as far as Scotland. Today Blackrock is a vibrant village with over 3,000 inhabitants.
Due to its location, the village, with its promenade and sweeping views over Dundalk Bay to the Cooley Mountains, continues to attract visitors all year round. During the summer months Blackrock is alive with activity as visitors and locals avail of the area’s extensive natural amenities, including the beaches and coastal walks, as well as the local restaurants, pubs and cafes. The seashore is an enjoyable and safe sailboarding venue, and more recently kitesurfing is becoming popular in the area.
In terms of Nature and Ecology, Dundalk Bay is the most important location in Ireland for wading birds. It is designated an internationally important wetland under the Ramsar Convention, and is a Special Area of Conservation and a Special Protection Area, protected at both European and national level. The seashore and beaches around Blackrock, including the inter-tidal mudflats and salt marshes, are an integral part of the delicate ecology of Dundalk Bay, and provide excellent opportunities for viewing oystercatchers, redshank, godwit and Brent geese.
With its abundance of natural assets, its seaside location, its thriving pub and restaurant scene, and its sporting facilities, Blackrock is an ideal place in which to live, a beautiful and interesting place to visit and a great location for golf.
Blackrock is 5km from Dundalk which is a modern-day vibrant multi-cultural town and is the capital of the North East which a hinterland that stretches across counties Louth, Meath, Monaghan, Cavan, Armagh and Down. Dundalk is one of Ireland’s largest towns, and is also the county town of Ireland's smallest county, Louth, which is affectionately known as the ‘Wee County’,
At the heart of Dundalk town centre there is a European style piazza with people drinking frothy cappuccinos, watching their children run through the magnificent fountain. The town and surrounding areas has an abundance of modern and medieval architecture side by side, churches, crosses and statues beside ancient pagan holy wells, and contemporary art depicting legendary tales from early Irish literature.
Louth is also the Land of Legends and is home to mighty warriors, druids, saints and scholars, blended with a more tangible history and heritage consisting of Cúchulainn’s Castle, a megalithic dolman, monastic round towers, high crosses and a Franciscan Friary to name but a few.
It is also a sporting town, home to the famous Dundalk Football Club and Dundalk Stadium, the only all-weather Horse and Greyhound Racing track in Ireland. The town also boasts several Gaelic football and hurling clubs as well as many other clubs which cater for a wide variety of sports. Each year the Cooley Mountains host the annual Poc Fada, an ancient game inspired by the feats of the legendary boy warrior Setanta who would run across the mountains striking a silver sliothar (ball) with his golden hurley (stick) into the air and then race to catch before it fell to the ground.
