MEMBERS UPDATE
November 5, 2021 GOLF COURSE CLOSURES Recent adverse weather has once again raised the issue of golf course closures. We would like to thank you for your patience and understanding in respect of the recent closures, which were due to heavy rain, and, as we head into winter, it is likely that there will be more occasions when the course will be closed due to bad weather. The decision to closing the course is always the last resort and is taken to protect the course from unnecessary damage which would result from playing golf in poor conditions caused by inclement weather. However, the recent closures have highlighted the need for the creation of a detailed protocol for dealing with course closures and meetings are being arranged with the relevant committees to draft one and have it introduced as soon as possible. This will, hopefully, give members a better understanding of the decision-making process behind a course closure as the decision taken by our Course Superintendent and his team is never taken lightly. During periods of bad weather, the Course team have to balance the wishes of the members to play golf with the expectation of members that our course is maintained to the highest standards. When the course is closed it does lead to comparisons with other courses in the area that may be open, but it should be remembered that each golf course has varying degrees of standards and etiquette along with varying ground conditions. Links courses, for example, have a massively reduced maintenance programme at this time of the year due to their soil structure and coastal location. Every effort is made to ensure that decisions in relation to course closures are taken at the right time and in the best interests of the club and the course which is our most important asset. Unfortunately, the recent closures promoted some unnecessary and uninformed commentary which was sadly directed at members of our staff. There are channels for members to exercise their right to comment and criticise and we would recommend that these are used instead. BUGGIES The use of buggies will be reviewed on a daily basis during the winter period in order to protect the course. The key factors when reviewing buggy use are the ground and weather conditions on the day and members safety while using a buggy. BAR/RESTAURANT SPEND Due to the Covid 19 restrictions on Hospitality earlier this year and last year where the Bar and Restaurant was closed, the Executive confirmed at a recent meeting that the members Bar and Restaurant levy will be carried over into 2022. We will be advising all members that the usual annual cut off for the bar and restaurant spend will be December 31, 2022.
