Gerry McDermott shot the best score as eight more players claimed their turkeys for Christmas in the singles stableford competition held over the last weekend in November Playing off 12 McDermott shot 33pts which was one better than Ciaran Traynor (4), Conor Murray (12) and George Rogers (16). After only picking up four points from the opening three holes, McDermott chipped in for a three-point par at the fourth and then got up and down at the next for another three point par. The next two holes only yielded two points, but he drained a long putt on the eighth for birdie and four points and then got up and down on nine and 10 for two more three-point pars. Two-point bogeys at the 11th and 12th followed to leave McDermott on 26pts with two holes left to go. He picked up four points at par three 13th when he rolled in a birdie putt from 15ft and then drained an even longer putt on the 14th for a three-point birdie and a final total of 33pts. That made him the Division 2 winner ahead of Murray while Traynor edged out Peter Rogers (3) for the Division 1 honours. Pascal Keenan (12) shot 31pts to take Division 3 from Sean McErlean (12) while George Rogers 32pts saw off Ciaran Rafferty (18) in Division 4. LADIES SECTION The final competition of the Ladies Winter League was played on Saturday November 27 and Tuesday November 29. Great scores were returned in all divisions, with Betty Rogers, Catherine Duff and Teresa O’Mahony claiming the divisional honours. Team Golden Retriever, captained by Maura Coyle, emerged as the overall winners by 10 points from Team German Shepherd, captained by Mary Laverty. Presentation of prizes for the Winter League, matchplay competitions and all other outstanding prizes took place in the Clubhouse on Tuesday night after the Ladies AGM. The overall winner of the Winter League singles competition was Joan McKenna, who played consistently good golf throughout. Louise Lynn was awarded Golfer of the Year for 2022. Louise played fabulous golf throughout the season and spoke of her joy at winning this prestigious prize for an amazing third time. Very well done to Louise on this superb achievement. At the AGM, the newly elected officers assumed office for the coming golfing year. Lady Captain Briege Renaghan, Lady Vice Captain Mags Coburn and Lady President Elizabeth McGuinness spoke of their delight and honour at being elected to their respective roles and looked forward to the golfing year ahead. The evening and the golfing year concluded with mulled wine and mince pies. The Men's Winter League will tee off over the first weekend in December with 10 teams taking part.
The League will be run over six 14-hole competitions with the best four scores on each team counting towards the team’s weekly score. Connor McCaughey and Pearse Murphy won the 14 Hole Turkey Singles Stableford competitions which were played on Saturday, November 19 and Sunday, November 20. Playing of 11 on the Saturday, Murphy opened with two three point pars and then had a two point par at the sixth and a three point par at the seventh before recording a four point birdies at the par three ninth and par five tenth. Another three point par at the 12th was followed by a two point par at the 13th. Even though he failed to score at the 14th his 34pts was still enough to comfortably take the overall victory by four points from Matthew McCaughey. The following day Connor McCaughey (4), Tommy Renaghan (11) and Eamon Hoey (14) had the best scores as they all shot 33pts to take Division 1, Division 2 and Division 3 respectively. Gerry Byrne (18) had 30pts to win Division 4. McCaughey’s round included three birdies and nine pars while Renaghan had one birdie and seven pars and Hoey had four pars and one birdie Sunday, 20 November 20 - 14 Hole Turkey Singles Stableford - Division 1: Connor McCaughey (4) 33pts, Niall McCaul (7) 32pts. LADIES SECTION The fifth week of the winter league was cancelled due to adverse weather conditions. A 14 hole singles stableford competition was played on Saturday and produced some fine scoring with Sylvia McKenna winning and Eva Beirne taking the runner up spot. The Ladies AGM and end of season presentation of prizes takes place on Tuesday November 29th in the clubhouse at 8pm. All ladies are encouraged to attend. Saturday, November 19 - 14 Hole Singles Stableford - Sylvia McKenna (54) 36pts, Eva Beirne (33) 33pts The 2023 edition of the Rules of Golf continues the modernisation process, with an emphasis on both inclusion and sustainability. For the first time, the modified Rules for players with disabilities have been fully incorporated into the playing rules without the need to adopt a local rule.
The R&A will not be printing the Player’s Edition of the Rules for 2023, and instead are encouraging all golfers to access the Rules via the Rules App. Members should visit the R&A website for information on rules updates LADIES SECTION
With only two weeks remaining weeks in this year’s winter league, Team Golden Retriever lead Team Poodle by eight points. A number of other teams lie in close contention. Anna Rowland won Division 1 of Week 4 with 31 points. Bernie MacGuinness won Division 2 with 28 points, and Teresa O’Mahony was the winner of Division 3 with 31 points. The Ladies AGM takes place in the clubhouse on Tuesday November 29 at 7pm. All ladies are encouraged to attend. ENDS MEN'S SECTION Kevin Barry produced the best score as a series of turkey competition commenced in the build up to Christmas. Playing off 11 he shot 33pts over 14 holes to win Division 2 by two points from Michael Gill (9). Barry had five holes where he recorded three points and took two points from each of the remaining nine holes and his round included a run of five straight pars from the 10th. Ultan Gaughran (7) shot 32pts to take Division 1, edging out Conall Murock (2) by one point. Padraig Fallon (13) needed countback to edge out Eamon McEneaney (12) for the Division 3 honours atter they finished on 30pts. Countback was also required to settle Division 4 as Patrick Arrowsmith (16) pipped Conor Byrne (17) after both shot 29pts. Timothy Jewell was the winner of Wednesday’s Singles Stableford competition shooting 38pts off 27. The Men’s AGM will take place on Monday, December 5 at 8pm. Barry Grennan won the 14 Hole Singles Stableford played over the first weekend of November with a super score of 34pts. Playing off 10, Grennan got off to a fast start with two three point pars from the first tqwo holes but he wobbled slightly with three consecutive one point returns from the fourth hole. However, a birdie four for four points at the par five seventh followed by three point par at the eighth got him back on track as he completed the first nine in 20pts and then pressed the accelerator down hard on the final five holes which yielded 14pts.. He birdied the par five 10th for another four points and then had back to back three-ppint pars at the next two holes before finishing with two-points pars over the last two holes. That left him on 34pts which was enough to give him overall victory by two points from Michael Coburn (8) who shot 32pts and took the Division 1 honours. Shane Thornton (11) and Patrick Arrowsmith (16) took the other divisions while Captain Eoin Doohan recorded the best gross score with 26pts. The Wednesday Singles Stableford Open sponsored by Deluxe Bathrooms was won by John McGeady (24) with a great score of 41pts that was five better than Terry McCann (21) in second place. A front nine of 23pts laid the foundation for McGeady’s great score which included seven three-point returns. Mary Carthy, Sally McDonnell and Joan McKenna were the divisional winners of the 14 hole stableford competition. Lady Captain Alison Quigley’s Dinner took place in the clubhouse last Friday night. There was a very large turnout of ladies, who thoroughly enjoyed the great food and entertainment. Saturday November 5 and Tuesday November 8 - Winter League Week 3 - Division 1: Mary Carthy (18) 29pts, Anna Rowland (16) 27pts, Mary Lou Grennan (21) 26pts. Division 2: Sally McDonnell (27) 30pts, Maura Shelly (29) 28pts, Geraldine Hoare (26) 25pts. The Men’s Winter League will commence on the weekend of November 26/27 and registration will run from Friday, November 11 to November 21.
Players can register at the Bar or in the Pro Shop. The entry fee will be €5 with all monies collected going into the prize fund. The Winter League will be run over six to eight weeks with some breaks for team events and will be run in conjunction with normal weekend competition. The number of players on each team to be decided when the total entry is confirmed. Teams to be picked based on handicap categories to ensure fair spread. MEN'S SECTION
Barry Cunningham won the Singles Stableford competition held over the Halloween weekend after he edged out Andrew Shekleton on countback. Both shot impressive rounds of 43pts with Cunningham’s superior back nine proving decisive as he outscored Shekleton by one point, 21pts to 20pts, on the homeward run. Shekleton, playing off 25, had gone out in 23pts helped by four-point pars at the third and eighth and three point pars at the fourth and ninth, He added another four-point par at the 11th and three point pars at the 12th and 17th but double bogeys at the 10th and 18th were to prove costly. Cunningham, who was playing off nine, went out in 22pts thanks to a four-point birdie on eight and three point pars on the first, third and seventh. Down the back he had three-point pars at the 11th, 15th and 16th and finished with a birdie on 18 for another three points and the overall victory. Shekleton took Division 3 while Division 1 was won by Gregory McCaughey and Ross Quigley won Division 2. Saturday, October 29 and Sunday, October 30 – Singles Stableford – Overall: Barry Cunningham (9) 43/21pts. Division 1: Gregory McCaughey (7) 38/18pts, Gerard Carroll (5) 38/17pts. Ladies Section The second round of the 14-hole Winter League took place over the Halloween Weekend with Maura Coyle posting the best score of the competition. She shot 32pts on her way to winning Division 3. Fionnuala Dullagahan shot 28pts to win Division 1 and Maeve Ahern took Division 2 on countback from June Desmond after both had shot 26pts. Congratulations to Edith Henry who finished fifth in the Golf Ireland Girls Junior Medal at Woodbrook last Friday. She shot 37pts and finished five points behind the winner, Holly Roberts of Donaghadee. Saturday October 29 and Tuesday November 1 - Winter League Week 2 - Division 1: Fionnuala Dullaghan (23) 28pts, Bernie McCabe (17) 27pts, Gillian McDonnell (12) 26pts.
