The inter-club season began for the men last weekend and saw victories for the Pierce Purcell and Jimmy Bruen teams. On Good Friday the Pierce Purcell team mastered the dreadful weather conditions to beat Silloge Park by 2.5 to 1.5 while on Easter Sunday the Jimmy Bruen team beat Greenore 3-1.
This weekend the JB Carr team face Seapoint at 3.15pm on Saturday with all five matches being played away from home while the Junior Cup begin the defence of their Leinster North title at 3pm with a first round match against Sutton. On Sunday, the Mixed Foursomes team meet Laytown & Bettystown at 3pm. The Ladies began their inter-club season on Palm Sunday with 2.5 to 2.5 draw against Castle in the home leg of Mary McKenna Diamond Trophy. They now travel to Dublin on Thursday for the second leg.

Wednesday, 16 April - McKenna Man Open Singles Stableford – Overall: Peter Durnin (4) 37pts. Shane Thornton’s showed Rory McIlroy-like resilience to win the Singles Stableford competition held over the weekend of April 12 and 13.
Playing off 16, he was going very well having earned 32pts after 13 holes but a double bogey six at the index 18 14th hole threaten to derail his round. But he immediately responded with three successive three-point pars on the difficult 15th, 16th and 17th holes and a two point bogey on the last for an 11pt haul over the final four holes. That saw him come in 19pts and having gone out in an impressive 24pts to post a score of 43pts which was not matched. His opening nine, which was bookended by three point pars at the first and ninth, included two four point birdies at the third and fifth and a three point birdie at the index 17 sixth. Andrew Nordon (33) shot 42pts and took the runners-up spot after edging out Eoghan McKenna (6) and Johannes Steenvoorden (26) on countback, McKenna claimed the Division 1 honours from Ultan Gaughran (12) while Steenvoorden (26) won Division 3 by one point from Graham Purcell (19). Pat Donaghy (16) won Division 2 by a single point from Billy Curran (18) and was helped by the five points he earned on the par three 17th when he holed his seven wood tee shot for his first ever hole-in-one. Playing off 24 he shot 44pts to take the overall prize from plus two handicapper Ben Cahill who had 42pts nett after a gross score of 44pts. Cahill, whose stroke score was an eight under par 64, had an eagle four at the 12th along with eight birdies and just two bogeys. Lynch had a great burst of scoring from the third. He had three point bogeys at the third and fourth, a four point birdie at the fifth and a three point par at the sixth to collect 13pts for the four holes. Another three point par followed at the eighth as he turned in 21 pts and down the back he picked up three points for pars at the 12th, 14th and 17th and three points for bogeys at the 11th, 15th and 16th as he came home in 23pts. Kevin Redmond (9) took Division 1 with 38pts, winning by one point from Ciaran Traynor (4). This time he took the overall prize by one point rather miss out by the minimum margin as he had the previous week and it was Patrick Clarke who has to settle for the runner-up spot after carding an impressive 47pts.
Steenvoorden, who was playing off 29, laid the foundation for his victory on the front nine which he covered in an amazing 28pts. Having started with a double bogey six for two points at the first he then reeled off three three-point pars, three three-point bogeys and two four-point pars at the fourth and eighth. He came home in 20pts thanks to a three-point par at 13 and two three-point bogeys at 12 and 18. He scored two points at the remaining holes apart from the 10th where a double bogey seven yielded one point. Playing off 20, Clarke opened with 22pts which included three-point returns on each of the first four holes followed by successive two-points returns on the next three holes, a one point at the eighth and a three-point par at the nine. That was followed by a 17-point haul over the first five holes down the back nine which included four-point returns at the 10th and 13th. Eight more points followed over the final four holes, including a three-point par at the 16th, as Clarke came home in 25pts for 47pts which turned out to be one point short of overall victory. Kenneth Cairns (11) took Division 1 with 44pts while Ben Walsh (17) needed countback before seeing off Aidan Rice (20) after both finished on 42pts. In Division Three Peter McGuinness (22) was the winner with 44pts while the best gross score of the competition belonged to Boys Captain Odhran MacShane who had four birdies while shooting 38pts. He eventually finished tied 13th on five over, six shots behind the winner Darragh Flynn who beat TJ Ford in a play-off. Rafferty was tied fifth, two shots off the lead, at the halfway point of the 36 hole tournament after shooting a one under par 70. Conditions were tougher in the afternoon and Rafferty could manage two birdies as he carded a six over par 77. The scores can be viewed here. |
