Noone leads home carolan cup qualifiers

There was a large turnout and tight competition in the weekend Carolan Cup Qualifier competition which saw Michael Noone (22) emerge as the overall winner and leading qualifier with a nett 68.  

On the outward nine his round included a par at the par five seventh and six holes of one over par to turn on 46 shots, nett 35. He continued his consistent scoring on the back nine with pars at the par five 12th and par three 13th holes, backed up with one overs at six holes to come home in 44 shots, net 33.

In the tight battle for Division 1 honours, a better back nine saw Aidan Thornton (7) on 69 nett edge out Ultan Gaughan (11), who also finished on 69 nett.  

Following the qualifying competition the following draw was made for the next round of the Carolan Cup: Frank P Byrne (12.2) v Sean Gallagher (12.1), Brendan Duffy (13.1) v Aidan Lawless (2.3), Sean Og Cairns (11.7) v Aidan Thornton (5.6), Ultan Gaughan (9.6) v Damian English (8.2), Richard Copas (20.7) v Billy Curran (16.8), Gavin McDonnell (20.7) v Joe McGill (22.9), Cameron Kilcoyne (13.5) v Michael Noone (19.1), Michael McKevitt (16.1) v Ciaran McAteer (15.1). Closing dates for matches will be posted in the Club’s Gents Locker Room.

In the Wednesday Open Singles Stableford competition sponsored by McKenna Man teenager Cameron Kilcoyne (15) emerged as the winner with 41 points.

He laid the foundation for his win with 22 points on a front nine which included three pointers with pars at the par three’s fifth and ninth holes, the par four second hole and par five seventh and a consistent run of two pointers at the other five holes. On the back nine he had three pointers with pars at the par fives tenth and twelfth holes and par four fifteenth to finish strongly.  

There are still some places available for the 2024 Club Classic which will take place on Friday, 10th May. The 18-hole and 9-hole competition for teams of four (any combination) is a semi-open competition so members may invite up to three guests to be part of their team. The Mixed Fourball team had a great win on Saturday against Portmarnock Golf Club. After the teams finished 2-2 the match went to sudden death with Dundalk prevailing on the first tie hole.
